Yankees Seeking Bullpen Upgrades
Fernando Cruz (oblique) and Mark Leiter Jr. (leg) on the injured list, the New York Yankees are looking to bolster their bullpen in advance of the July 31 trade deadline, Chris Kirschner of The Athletic reports. Three Minnesota Twins - Jhoan Duran, Griffin Jax, and Danny Coulombe - as well as Pittsburgh Pirates closer David Bednar are among the known targets for New York, according to Kirschner. Coulombe and Bednar are more realistic options than Duran and Jax, as Minnesota doesn't figure to give up either of the latter two for anything other than a massive offer. Coulombe, meanwhile, is a soon-to-be free agent who could give the Yankees a much-needed lefty setup man to join Tim Hill. Bednar still has another year of team control left, but it seems likely the last-place Pirates will trade him over the next week. Bednar will have to transition to a setup role if he goes to the Yankees and they continue with Devin Williams as their closer.
