Rafael Devers Traded to San Francisco
Rafael Devers in exchange for right-handed pitchers Jordan Hicks, Jose Bello, left-handed pitcher Kyle Harrison, and outfield prospect James Tibbs III. Devers has spent his entire tenure in the major leagues with the Boston Red Sox. Earlier this season, Devers expressed frustration with the club, which could have played a role in the trade. Through 73 games this season, Devers has only been deployed as a DH and posted a .272/.401/.504 slash line with 18 doubles and 15 home runs. Through nine seasons in Boston, Devers has made the All-Star team three times. He enjoyed his best campaign in 2021, when he launched a career-best 38 round-trippers. In San Francisco, fantasy managers should expect Devers to likely cover the hot corner, especially with Matt Chapman (hand) on the IL. However, once Chapman returns, Devers will likely return to a DH role or potentially see time at first base. In Boston, the DH will likely be a revolving door and could open the door for top prospects Marcelo Mayer and Roman Anthony to see consistent time in the lineup. Harrison and Hicks should compete for roles in the starting rotation in Boston. In addition, Bello will likely remain in Rookie Ball while Tibbs will report to Boston's High-A affiliate.
