Top Fantasy Football Injuries From Sunday: Christian McCaffrey, Josh Allen, Justin Fields, David Montgomery, Deebo Samuel, more

2025 Fantasy Football Early-Round Best Ball Busts, Overvalued

Top Injuries From Week 6 Football for RB, WR, QB, TE (2023), as of 10/16 including Christian McCaffrey, Josh Allen, Justin Fields, David Montgomery, Deebo Samuel, and more.

Every NFL season, there seems to be a Sunday slate of games that sees a ton of fantasy football stars get dinged up. This year, Week 6 might have been that week. Our fantasy football injuries report highlights the banged-up players with fantasy significance and their early status heading into Week 7 as of Monday, October 16, 2023. This article focuses on players who suffered injuries on Sunday of Week 6 games.

Christian McCaffrey, Josh Allen, Justin Fields, David Montgomery, Deebo Samuel, and more picked up injuries in Week 6.  It's too early to draw conclusions about Week 7 since these players just picked up ailments, but it's never too early to at least take a look at the group of key guys to prepare for waiver wire Wednesday or Thursday.

Christian McCaffrey Injury Update

San Francisco 49ers running back Christian McCaffrey (oblique, ribs) didn't return to Sunday's loss to Cleveland. It was reported initially he was ruled out with an oblique issue. However, head coach Kyle Shanahan said after the game that McCaffrey also has a rib injury.

Fortunately, the 49ers don't play until Monday night in Week 7 against the Vikings, so an extra day of rest can go a long way. But if McCaffrey isn't cleared for action, Jordan Mason and Elijah Mitchell are expected to split carries, although neither player would be a lock to produce for fantasy managers.

Josh Allen Injury Update

Buffalo Bills quarterback Josh Allen missed a couple of plays in the team's victory over the New York Giants on Sunday night. He landed on his shoulder/head area and quickly went to the medical tent to get tests done. Allen returned and finished the contest, although he alluded to being banged up after the game. According to a source close to the Bills, scans on Allen's shoulder appeared "normal" but he will undergo more tests this week.

Still, it appears Allen dodged a major injury and should be good to go against New England in Week 7. The two-time Pro Bowler is currently the QB1 for fantasy football.

Justin Fields Injury Update

Chicago Bears quarterback Justin Fields (thumb) will undergo an MRI. The signal-caller dislocated his thumb during Sunday's loss to the Minnesota Vikings and couldn't grip the ball. While X-rays were negative, he'll need an MRI on Monday to see how bad the damage is.

The Bears play the Raiders in Week 7, possibly without Fields under center. If he's officially ruled out, Tyson Bagent, who took over for Fields and finished with 83 yards and an interception off 10-for-14 passing, may get the start.

David Montgomery Injury Update

Detroit Lions running back David Montgomery (ribs) is expected to miss some time with a rib injury, according to Dave Birkett of the Detroit Free Press. The veteran departed the game in the second quarter and did not return. X-rays came back negative. Craig Reynolds primarily picked up the slack after Montgomery left the game.

The Lions' backfield is getting decimated. Rookie Jahmyr Gibbs (hamstring) has missed two straight games with a hamstring injury and Zonovan Knight (shoulder) is on injured reserve. Montgomery has been one of the best running backs in fantasy football this year, despite already missing one game due to an injury.

Deebo Samuel Injury Update

San Francisco 49ers wide receiver Deebo Samuel (shoulder) will undergo an MRI to determine the severity of the injury suffered in Sunday's loss to Cleveland. However, X-ray results already came back negative, so the team remains optimistic he "will be fine."

Samuel had two carries for 11 yards and failed to catch his only target versus the Browns before exiting. But assuming everything goes well with the MRI and upcoming practice sessions, he should be available in Week 7 for the Monday Night meeting with the Minnesota Vikings.

Trevor Lawrence Injury Update

Jacksonville Jaguars quarterback Trevor Lawrence (knee) finished Sunday's win over the Colts by throwing for 181 yards, two touchdowns, and a pick. He also completed 20 of his 30 passing attempts and added 15 yards off three carries.

Unfortunately, the signal-caller suffered a left knee injury in this one. Although he stated he's feeling "ok," he won't speculate on his availability for Thursday night against New Orleans. Lawrence will undergo more testing. But if he can't suit up versus the Saints, C.J. Beathard may be under center.

Jimmy Garoppolo Injury Update

Las Vegas Raiders quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo (back) completed 14 passes on 22 attempts (63.6%) for 162 yards and a touchdown in the Week 6 win against the New England Patriots. The veteran quarterback averaged 7.3 yards per attempt, and his interception issues continued.

Garoppolo exited the game in the second half with a back injury and was quickly ruled out. After the Raiders starter left the game, veteran Brian Hoyer replaced him. It remains to be seen how severe the damage is, but a back injury could force Garoppolo to miss time. We should get updates in the next few days surrounding Garoppolo's status and the Raiders' plans for the QB position.

If Garoppolo does miss time, the Raiders will have to choose between Hoyer and rookie Aidan O'Connell, who started a game for them early this season. Fantasy managers will want to keep a close eye on the situation because it will likely affect the value of the Raiders playmakers. Garoppolo is likely not a starting-caliber quarterback for fantasy in single-QB leagues.

Ryan Tannehill Injury Update

Tennessee Titans quarterback Ryan Tannehill (ankle) was seen using crutches after Sunday's loss to the Baltimore Ravens in London. Tannehill, who threw 76 yards and a touchdown, injured his ankle and was transported to the locker room on a cart. Normally, it wouldn't take long for a player to receive an MRI. But it may be longer than usual before fantasy managers receive the results, considering the team has a lengthy flight home.

The Titans have a bye in Week 7, so there's a chance Tannehill could be back under center against the visiting Falcons in Week 8, depending on the results. But if the veteran signal-caller misses extended time, Malik Willis or Will Levis would presumably take over under center.
