Fantasy Football Matchup Outlooks
Below are some fantasy football outlooks written by our NFL team here at RotoBaller, bringing you their fantasy football analysis and advice on which players to consider starting in Week 13:
Colston Loveland, TE, Chicago Bears
Chicago Bears rookie tight end Colston Loveland hauled in four of five targets for 49 yards and a touchdown in the 31-28 victory over the Pittsburgh Steelers. Loveland has emerged as a key contributor in this Bears' passing attack, totaling 40 or more yards in four straight weeks.
However, veteran Cole Kmet remains a factor, splitting the snaps evenly in Week 12 (65%). While Loveland is showcasing his potential, the Bears are the fifth-most run-heavy team in the NFL, and have seven receivers who have 195 yards or more on the season.
Loveland faces a tough matchup against the Philadelphia Eagles, who have allowed the second-fewest fantasy points to tight ends this season. With a crowded receiving room and a tough matchup, Loveland is a risky start in Week 13.
Dallas Goedert, TE, Philadelphia Eagles
Philadelphia Eagles tight end Dallas Goedert let down once again last week, tallying his fifth straight performance with fewer than 50 yards. In fact, Goedert has only eclipsed that number once this season-in Week 6 when he finished with 110 yards.
His once-remarkable touchdown streak now feels like a distant memory as he has failed to find the end zone in three consecutive games. What's also concerning is his lack of targets; Goedert has recorded three or fewer looks in three of his last five outings. He has become a rather untrustworthy player lately, so it's difficult to be optimistic about him this week, even against a Bears defense giving up the seventh-most fantasy points to tight ends.
Goedert has some work to do to be considered elite again, and for now is only valuable if he starts seeing more red zone work. He's a high-risk, high-reward TE2 in Week 13.
Brenton Strange, TE, Jacksonville Jaguars
Jacksonville Jaguars tight end Brenton Strange returned from the Injured Reserve in Week 12 against the Arizona Cardinals and showed no signs of rust. He converted on all five of his targets for 93 receiving yards. Strange has always been a favorite target of quarterback Trevor Lawrence, and given their history together, Strange provides a reasonable floor as a tight end in PPR formats.
His upside will be limited by the cluttered pass-catching room that now includes Brian Thomas Jr. (ankle), Jakobi Meyers, Parker Washington, and Strange. And while Lawrence is not the type of quarterback to make all of those pass-catchers a great fantasy play weekly, Strange's rapport with Lawrence provides a floor that makes him worth an add if you are struggling at the tight end position or lost Tucker Kraft (knee) or Sam LaPorta (back) to injury.
Fantasy teams in a pinch, deep leagues, or even two flex spots can also consider Strange for that role. On the season, he's hauled in 25 of his 29 receptions for 297 yards in six games (one of which he was injured early on and did not return).
Theo Johnson, TE, New York Giants
New York Giants tight end Theo Johnson recorded three catches for 77 yards on three targets in his team's Week 12 overtime loss to the Detroit Lions. Across 12 games this season, the 24-year-old has hauled in 39 receptions for 427 yards and five touchdowns on 60 targets. While Johnson's numbers don't jump off the page, he's been extremely consistent.
In his last six games, Johnson has recorded exactly three receptions five times. The Giants may be getting starting quarterback Jaxson Dart (concussion) back in Week 13 after he's missed each of their last two games due to a concussion. Across Dart's last four games before getting injured, he targeted Johnson 25 times.
He lacks explosive upside, but Johnson has proven to be a high-floor fantasy tight end option who should be a waiver-wire target in leagues with 12 or more teams heading into a Week 13 matchup against the New England Patriots.
Harold Fannin, TE, Cleveland Browns
Cleveland Browns rookie tight end Harold Fannin Jr. led the team with four catches (six targets) for 40 yards in a Week 12 win over the Las Vegas Raiders. After running just 48.5% of the team's routes in Week 11, his lowest in a game since Week 5, Fannin climbed back to 66.7% in Week 12 and paced the Cleveland passing attack in Shedeuer Sanders' first career start.
The rookie tight end played a season-high 89.6% of snaps and continued to showcase his exceptional tackle-breaking ability, forcing 11 missed tackles in the game, which is the most by a tight end in a game this season. Fannin mostly operates in a short area of the field to let him generate yards after the catch, and Sanders looked for him as a checkdown frequently.
The upside isn't super high for Fannin in a bad Cleveland offense, but he has been their most consistent pass catcher this season. He is worthy of a waiver add in 12-team leagues for fantasy managers looking for a tight end.
Kyle Pitts, TE, Atlanta Falcons
Atlanta Falcons tight end Kyle Pitts Sr. recorded two catches for 25 scoreless yards in Sunday's 24-10 win over the Saints. While the result was disappointing, the silver lining was that with five targets, the 25-year-old led the team in that statistic.
The same was true the last time Kirk Cousins was the starter in Week 8 against the Dolphins, a game that Drake London (knee) also missed as he did on Sunday. It's not clear whether or not London will be back in Week 13, but if he were to miss the contest, Pitts could be the frontrunner for targets again, so it will be imperative to watch the injury reports this week.
Cousins may spread the ball around a bit more than Michael Penix Jr. did, though, which could limit the production of the receiving corps, including Pitts. The 6-foot-6 tight end has just one touchdown on the season, so even fewer targets could push him into TE2 territory for Week 13's matchup with the Jets, a defense that is middle of the pack in terms of fantasy points allowed to tight ends.
