The boss is promising a promotion, stringing them along. Just as that new title is within reach, it's pulled at the last second.
That's exactly what happened to Jacoby Brissett in Washington. After providing some juice to the offense, he was named the starting quarterback for the Commanders. Days before the promotion was official, a hamstring injury took it away.

Jacoby Brissett Injury Update for Fantasy Football
Brissett's hamstring ailment removed him from the starting lineup in Week 17. Instead, he acted as the third-string emergency quarterback.
To begin the practice week leading into their season finale against the Cowboys, the veteran is a limited participant.
Whether he'll be healthy enough to play on Sunday remains to be seen. But it appears his starting gig has already vanished.
Jacoby Brissett Fantasy Football Outlook
Sam Howell will start the final game of Washington's season. That means, at best, Brissett is relegated to a reserve role. Howell is the first quarterback to start every game for Washington since Kirk Cousins in 2017.
Brissett may never start a game in Landover. The 31-year-old signed a one-year contract with the Commanders in the offseason, so he'll be an unrestricted free agent.
Howell has proved to be a strong enough quarterback to at least serve as a backup in the NFL. Currently armed with the second-overall pick (although that could change when the regular season comes to a close), the Commanders' brass will be searching for a franchise quarterback in the 2024 NFL Draft. Don't be surprised if a rookie and Howell are the quarterbacks competing for the starting job in training camp, with Brissett donning a different jersey.
