Philadelphia Phillies' No. 8 prospect, Mick Abel, has struggled in the minors since being selected in the first round of the 2020 MLB Draft. However, Abel has seemed to finally put it all together in 2025. He looked solid on the mound in his first eight starts at Triple-A this season and earned a promotion to the major league roster last week. 

In his major league debut on Sunday, the right-hander threw six scoreless innings with nine strikeouts against the Pittsburgh Pirates. Unfortunately, the Phillies sent him back down to Triple-A following a spot start. 

So, when are the Phillies going to call up Abel? Can we expect him to be promoted again in May? Let's dive in and find out. 

Mick Abel Prospect Update for Fantasy Baseball

Abel had a couple of rough minor league seasons in his first four years in Philadelphia's farm system. His worst season came in 2024 when the 23-year-old finished with a 6.46 ERA and 117 strikeouts across 24 starts for Triple-A Lehigh Valley. He also walked a career-high 78 batters across 108 2/3 innings, and opposing hitters had a .279 batting average against him. 

However, Abel might finally be hitting his stride on the mound. He has a 2.53 ERA and 51 strikeouts across eight starts at Triple-A this season, and his walk rate is significantly down from last year. Although a 9.9% walk rate is still high, the right-hander didn't have any command issues in his major league debut over the weekend.

Abel was called up by the Phillies for a spot start on Sunday and didn't walk a batter across six dominant innings. The former first-round pick didn't show much nerves on the mound in his first MLB start. With a 37.5% whiff rate in that outing, he showed that his stuff could play in the majors.

It's unfortunate that the Phillies optioned Abel back to Triple-A following that electric start. However, that was always the plan for the right-hander. With Aaron Nola (ankle) landing on the 15-day injured list, the team plans to have Taijuan Walker fill his spot in the rotation.

That means it might be some time until Abel returns to the majors. Nola should return from his ankle injury very soon, and the Phillies' rotation has been one of the top units to start the season. That makes it unlikely for the 23-year-old to be promoted again until another injury occurs in the rotation. 

So, he is someone to just monitor on the waiver wire for the time being. He isn't necessarily a strong stash, and no one really knows when he will be back up with the major league club. Top pitching prospect, Andrew Painter, is also knocking on the door of a potential promotion this summer, which could complicate things for Abel.
