RotoBaller PGA: One And Done Staff Picks - Rocket Mortgage

The PGA RotoBaller staff digs into their One and Done selections for the Rocket Mortgage. Here are some under-the-radar plays and picks for this week's event.

One And Done Staff Picks Overview

Here at RotoBaller, we are always searching for ways to give our readers the best fantasy sports content possible. With that goal in mind, we are very proud to announce the weekly PGA “One and Done” column will be back for a third season.

In this feature, our golf staff of Joe Nicely, Spencer Aguiar, Andrew Putters and Josh Bennett will provide their weekly golf picks every Wednesday. The purpose of this article is to present you with alternative options to consider and hopefully make your selection a much easier process weekly. With that plan in mind, let's get started!

For an in-depth breakdown of the top DraftKings and FanDuel plays, check out Joe Nicely's weekly Horse For The Course that highlights the best fits for the week's course. And you can also find out who the smart money is on by checking out Spencer Aguiar's PGA DFS: Vegas Report every week. Be sure to also read all of our other top-notch weekly PGA DFS and betting articles to help you win big!

One and Done Selections - Rocket Mortgage

Joe Nicely - Maverick McNealy

Alternate - Matthew Wolff

After not really gaining any ground in last week’s Brian-Harman-Palooza that was this panel’s Travelers picks, I entered this week with the mindset of taking a wild card. After reviewing the players left at my disposal in this contest that went from a choice to a must.

If you are gonna go out on a limb in an OAD format, the Rocket Mortgage is the perfect tournament to do so. In two years on the schedule, this Donald Ross layout has shown that it is a pushover for modern players and has twice devolved into the type of birdie-fest event that the PGA Tour apparently loves. These types of tournaments - along with the type of ugly field that is showing up to Detroit this week - are notorious for creating volatility. While last year’s winner, Bryson DeChambeau, certainly qualifies as an elite talent, don’t forget that the inaugural Rocket Mortgage was won by journeyman Nate Lashley at 25-under par with a Monday qualifier named Doc Redman not far behind.

So...I’m going a little (or a lot) off script here with Maverick McNealy, a player that’s always been brimming with talent, but has only recently started to look comfortable on the PGA Tour. Mav has demonstrated his potential upside this year with top-five finishes at both Pebble Beach and Harbour Town. He heads to Motown - where he scored a T8 in last year’s Rocket Mortgage - on the heels of solid outings in each of his last two starts. McNealy is great off the tee, terrific with the putter on the Poa greens, and has the ability to rack up birdies in bunches. It’s certainly possible that one of the handful of elite players teeing it up this week simply outclasses the field, but another likely scenario is that we’re looking at a surprise winner this week and I like Mav to pull off a shocker in Detroit.

Spencer Aguiar - Jason Kokrak

Alternate - Hideki Matsuyama

I am not sure how to feel about my selection this week for the RotoBaller OAD contest. On the positive side of things, it is pretty simple for me to take Jason Kokrak since both Andrew and Joe have already used him earlier in the season, but I can't help but notice Andrew has Webb Simpson left on his board, who I believe might be one of the better players to roll out in any league. On the other hand, Joe could get extremely cute in multiple directions, and I wouldn't hate a pick from him of a golfer like Kevin Kisner, Maverick McNealy, Brendon Todd or anyone that is along that line of thinking. The question I keep asking myself is: At what point am I playing things too safe with a lead and trying to run out the clock with the chalk pick of the event? And while the answer to that might be that I am making precisely that error, I just think there is too much safety built into Kokrak for Detroit.

The American ranks third in my model and inside the top-25 in all five categories that I attached a weight to for the Rocket Mortgage, and my goal remains to make someone get hot down the stretch to take this title away from me. I believe Kokrak provides one of the higher floors for this tournament, even if his upside might not match that of a pick like Simpson, but I am assuming I will need to dodge a bullet of some kind.

*** Despite the negative nature of the post, I do believe Kokrak is the most stable selection for those front-running a contest. From a game theory perspective, I would consider thinking outside of the box if you are chasing, but it just comes down to where you find yourself in your league!

Josh Bennett - Jason Kokrak

Alternate - Cameron Tringale

The formula seems pretty simple in the limited history for the Rocket Mortgage. Hit it a real long way because there’s not much trouble and then stick the wedges close. Get a little lucky putting (or just be a good putter) and you have yourself a winner. Kokrak fits that formula perfectly. He’s very long off the tee, an excellent iron player, and can win if he gets the putter going as he proved already once this year. He logged a top 30 finish two years ago and he’s playing some of the best golf of his career right now, I think he’ll significantly improve on that course history this year.

Yearly Earnings -$3,809,732

Yearly Cuts Made - 18/25

Andrew Putters - Webb Simpson

Alternate - Patrick Reed

Yearly Earnings - $5,839,153

I really think Webb will be overlooked this week. This course is not too long for him, his iron play is good, and he’s one of the best putters on tour. This is a good field, but still, a lot of the heavy hitters are taking this week off. Webb feels like he can win every regular tour event. You really can not go wrong with either Simpson or Reed.
