Tony Wolters Shows Defensive Value
6 years agoColorado Rockies catcher Tony Wolters doesn’t usually bring much with the bat, but the team is loving his effect on the pitching staff. Starting pitcher German Marquez has credited Wolters with helping his performance by not only allowing but encouraging Marquez to throw more curveballs low in the zone by aggressively promising that he’ll block whatever Marquez throws. This helps because Marquez’s curveball is one of his most dangerous pitches, so this approach is helping give Marquez the confidence to still use it in hairy situations like when runners are in scoring position. As a bonus, Wolters has recently been tearing it up at the plate. Either way, expect to see him in the lineup on a daily basis since his defense plays so well.
