Steven Matz Has Been "Lights Out"
4 years agoToronto Blue Jays starting pitcher Steven Matz has been "lights out" in spring training. Matz had a disappointing 2020 season with the Mets and was traded to Toronto in the offseason. The left-hander threw five innings of one-run ball against the Philadelphia Phillies last Saturday and has made a case for a rotation spot to begin the 2021 season. Matz has not allowed a single free pass this spring, which is notable after he had a 9.68 ERA that led to him being booted from New York's rotation last year. But the 29-year-old is getting a fresh start with a new team and looks comfortable so far. "He's been outstanding," manager Charlie Montoyo said. "He's got the tools; he's got the arm. Sometimes the change of scenery will do wonders for people, and he could be one of those."
