Steelers Optimistic On Long-Term Deal For T.J. Watt
3 years agoPittsburgh Steelers head coach Mike Tomlin said that he's optimistic that the team will get a long-term contract extension worked out with star linebacker T.J. Watt, which will likely make Watt the highest-paid defensive player in the league. Tomlin expects Watt to return to practice on Wednesday to get ready for Week 1 against the Buffalo Bills, but that still remains up in the air. The two sides have been in intense contract negotiations through most of the summer. If a deal doesn't get done by Sunday, there's a good chance that the Steelers will put it off until after the season. Guaranteed money is at the center of the negotiations. The two-time first-team All-Pro has only taken part in individual drills during training camp, but he figures to be out there on the field this Sunday, with or without a new contract. Watt had 15 sacks and 53 tackles in 2020, making him a solid IDP option at the linebacker position.
