Sean Murphy 2023 MLB Player Outlook: Trending ADP Leaning Towards Undervalued Following Trade
2 years agoThe rumor mill swirled around catcher Sean Murphy for much of the offseason before a trade across the country to the Atlanta Braves. The former Oakland Athletic should see his offensive game benefit as part of a far-superior Braves lineup following an encouraging season at the plate in 2022. In short, Murphy took the steps you love to see out of an offensively-developing catcher. In his age-27 season, Murphy hit 18 home runs, drove in 66 runs, and produced a .331 wOBA, and 122 wRC+. However, he also cut his K% from 25.4% in 2021 to 20.3% in 2022 while slightly increasing his walk rate from 8.9% to 9.2%. His underlying metrics were also encouraging as he ranked in the 80th percentile in xwOBA, 76th in xSLG, and 73rd in barrel rate. With just 330 career games under his belt, the best is yet to come for the 2016 third-round pick. Murphy is currently our 11th-ranked backstop while trending at a 128 ADP in standard 12-team leagues. However, with Steamer projecting his HR, RBI, R, and ISO figures to improve this season, he is an excellent play around his prevailing ADP.
