Rays Conclude First Round By Taking Alika Williams
5 years agoThe Tampa Bay Rays selected Arizona State shortstop Alika Williams with the 37th overall pick in the 2020 MLB draft on Wednesday. This year's first round started and ended with Arizona State players in Spencer Torkelson (first overall) and Williams. Williams was taken by the Yankees in the 32nd round in 2017 out of high school. The 21-year-old makes consistent contact from the right side and doesn't swing and miss often; he walked more than he struck out in his sophomore season. Williams has added some strength in the last few years, but power may never be part of his game. The youngster has above-average speed but isn't a burner. There have been comparisons to Pirates shortstop Kevin Newman. He has a chance to be an everyday player at the next level, although his bat doesn't have a ton of upside.
