Phillies Turning Attention To Andrelton Simmons
4 years agoThe Philadelphia Phillies were finally able to re-sign All-Star catcher J.T. Realmuto on Tuesday. With their top offseason priority taken care of, they are now shifting their focus to shortstop, specifically free-agent shortstop Andrelton Simmons, according to sources. Last year's shortstop, Didi Gregorius, is also a candidate to return. Simmons is the better defender of the two and will likely come cheaper than Gregorius. With the Mets, Braves and Nationals all currently projected to finish ahead of Philadelphia in 2021, the Phillies would like to get their shortstop situation settled. Simmons has been one of the best defensive shortstops, but he had a 79 wRC+ in 103 games in 2019 for the Angels and opted out of the 2020 season late in the year. There is some modest pop and speed in the 31-year-old's profile, but he's really only bench depth as a middle infielder in deep mixed and AL/NL-only leagues.
