Chicago Cubs catcher Miguel Amaya (oblique) has resumed normal batting practice, catching bullpen sessions and throwing but is "not close" to game action yet, according to manager Craig Counsell. Amaya is recovering from a strained left oblique and will not come off the 10-day injured list before the All-Star break. However, if the 26-year-old continues to make progress and is able to go on a minor-league rehab assignment sooner than later, he could be ready to rejoin the Cubs as their primary backstop early in the second half of the season, which begins on July 18. In the meantime, Carson Kelly will draw the majority of starts behind the plate in Chicago. Kelly is having a fine first season on the North Side, hitting .267 (46-for-172) with nine homers and 29 RBI. He enters Wednesday's action riding a modest four-game hitting streak in which he's gone 6-for-13 with three doubles, three RBI and two runs scored.--Keith HernandezSource: MLB.com

The Houston Astros transferred outfielder/designated hitter Yordan Alvarez (hand) to the 60-day injured list on Wednesday, according to the Houston Chronicle's Matt Kawahara. In an additional moves, the Astros placed infielder Luis Guillorme (hamstring) on the 10-day IL with a hamstring strain and recalled infielder Zack Short from Triple-A Sugar Land. Houston was hoping that Alvarez could rejoin the club before the All-Star break, but that is unlikely to happen now after the 28-year-old All-Star suffered a setback this week. It's turned into a lost season for the left-handed slugger, as he's been out since early May and has hit just .210/.306/.340 with three home runs, 18 RBI and seven runs scored. Fantasy managers must continue to stash Alvarez and keep their fingers cross that he can return for the start of the second half on July 18.--Keith HernandezSource: Houston Chronicle - Matt Kawahara

San Francisco Giants outfielder Heliot Ramos will take the day off on Wednesday in the tilt versus the division-rival Arizona Diamondbacks at Chase Field. Luis Matos will draw into the lineup in left field and will hit sixth against Diamondbacks right-hander Merrill Kelly. It's a good time for a breather for Ramos, who has gone 2-for-24 with eight strikeouts in his last six games played. The former first-rounder out of Puerto Rico is hitting a respectable .272 (88-for-323) on the year as an everyday player for the Giants and has added 13 homers, 44 RBI and five steals after being a first-time All-Star in 2024. Under the hood, though, he's sporting an xBA of .255 and xwOBA of .344. He's in the 55th percentile in hard-hit rate and 70th percentile in average exit velocity. Matos has a homer and two RBI while hitting .222 in nine career at-bats against Kelly.--Keith HernandezSource: MLB.com

The Cleveland Cavaliers have reached a one-year deal with free-agent forward Larry Nance Jr. on Tuesday. After one injury-riddled season in Atlanta, Nance has decided to head back to Cleveland where he played from 2017-2021. Last season, Nance averaged 8.5 points, 4.3 rebounds, and 1.6 assists across 19.3 minutes per game in 24 games. At this point in his career, Nance isn't going to play big minutes, but could still contribute with minutes in the teens. He figures to play a primary role off the bench behind Evan Mobley and Jarrett Allen. It probably won't be a big enough role to warrant rostering in most fantasy leagues right away.--Andy WebbSource: Evan Sidery

Arizona Diamondbacks first baseman Josh Naylor (neck) is serving as the designated hitter and will bat cleanup on Wednesday against the division-rival San Francisco Giants and right-hander Landen Roupp. Pavin Smith will make another start at first base and bat third for Arizona. Naylor was in the original lineup on Tuesday before being scratched and missing his fourth straight game due to lingering soreness in his neck. The 28-year-old left-handed slugger will give it another go on Wednesday, though. Naylor's 10 homers for a first baseman leave plenty to be desired, but he hit .311/.366/.486 with three homers, 16 RBI and 12 runs in the month of June and is hitting .304 (89-for-293) on the year with 53 RBI, 42 runs and 10 steals in his first year with the Snakes. Nine of his 10 homers on the year have come against righties. Get him back into your starting lineups.--Keith HernandezSource: MLB.com

The Philadelphia 76ers have agreed on a one-year deal with Eric Gordon on Tuesday. Despite a rough first year in Philly, Gordon is back for another season with the Sixers. Gordon averaged a career-low 6.8 points with 1.2 rebounds, and 1.7 assists in 39 games with the 76ers last season. He missed a good part of the season due to a wrist injury. It's a low-risk deal for the Sixers to bring in a veteran presence who is still a reliable three-point shooter. It's unlikely Gordon isn't going to offer much fantasy value, but he could be a decent contributor off the bench.--Andy WebbSource: John Clark

The Los Angeles Lakers have made a big splash and signed free-agent center Deandre Ayton on Wednesday. The two sides have reportedly agreed on a two-year deal. Ayton decided to opt-out of his deal with the Trail Blazers after two seasons in Portland. He averaged 14.4 points, 10.2 rebounds, and 1.6 assists in 40 games with the Blazers last season. Ayton has averaged a double-double in each of his first seven seasons in the league. He'll now be surrounded with some top talent such as LeBron James and Luka Doncic. Despite that, Ayton should be able to produce top-100 fantasy value, assuming he stays healthy. It's worth noting that has been limited to less than 60 games in three of the last four seasons. When healthy, Ayton can be a serious contributor on this Lakers roster.--Andy WebbSource: Shams Charania

Seattle Mariners catcher Cal Raleigh is out of the starting lineup for Wednesday's contest against the visiting Kansas City Royals. Mitch Garver is behind the plate and will catch right-hander Logan Gilbert while hitting sixth against Royals left-hander Noah Cameron. Raleigh is receiving just his third day off of the season. In all fairness, it's been hard for the M's to sit him down with how dominant he's been on offense in 2025. The 28-year-old switch-hitting catcher has been one of the best players in all of baseball this year and comes into Wednesday's action leading the league with 33 home runs and 71 RBI in 84 games. He's also added a superb .272/.383/.641 slash line, 1.024 OPS, 60 runs scored and nine stolen bases in 371 plate appearances. Even with some regression due in the second half, Raleigh is going to easily finish with a career year in 2025.--Keith HernandezSource: MLB.com

Los Angeles Angels catcher Logan O'Hoppe will start on the bench for Wednesday's contest in Atlanta against the Braves at Truist Park. Travis d'Arnaud is behind the plate to catch left-hander Yusei Kikuchi and will hit seventh against Braves right-handed rookie Didier Fuentes. O'Hoppe will take the day off after starting in each of the last four games behind the plate for the Halos while going 3-for-19 with a double. The 25-year-old starting backstop is one of the better offensive backstops in baseball and enters Wednesday's action with 17 home runs and 37 RBI despite hitting only .237 (57-for-250). O'Hoppe has gone 8-for-34 (.235) with three long balls, a double, six RBI and three runs in nine games over the last 14 days. d'Arnaud will be looking to make some noise against his former team, but he'll be a low-upside DFS play that has just four homers in his 124 at-bats in 2025.--Keith HernandezSource: MLB.com

Cincinnati Reds first baseman Spencer Steer (hand) has been scratched ahead of Wednesday's game against the Boston Red Sox. Steer was hit in the hand by a pitch during the first game of the doubleheader earlier in the day. He was originally cleared to play in this game, but now they've decided to take the cautious approach. In his absence, Christian Encarnacion-Strand will take over the cold corner and bat eighth on Wednesday. It's worth noting that Encarnacion-Strand fouled a ball off his foot earlier on Wednesday and was out of the original lineup. He'll battle through the injury and play in the nightcap.--Andy WebbSource: Gordon Wittenmyer

ESPN's Kris Rhim writes that Los Angeles Chargers rookie fifth-round tight end Oronde Gadsden was the most active pass-catcher during offseason workouts and became a favorite target of quarterback Justin Herbert. Gadsden's size (6-foot-5, 250 pounds) and speed (4.65-second 40-yard dash at the scouting combine) makes him difficult to cover and one to watch at training camp and the preseason. The 22-year-old could become a receiving threat sooner or later for the Bolts, a team whose passing offense struggled mightily in 2024. However, they will continue to run the ball plenty under offensive coordinator Greg Roman, especially after drafting Omarion Hampton in the first round and signing Najee Harris in free agency. Gadsden, a converted wideout, has intriguing pass-catching abilities, but he'll need to block to find regular playing time eventually.--Keith HernandezSource: ESPN.com - Kris Rhim

Baltimore Orioles third baseman Jordan Westburg (finger) is out of the starting lineup ahead of Wednesday's game against the Texas Rangers. Westburg is set to miss his fifth game in a row due to a left finger sprain. It doesn't sound like the O's plan to place Westburg on the injured list despite him missing eight of the last 10 games. This is obviously a frustrating situation for fantasy managers, but they will have to remain patient. Ramon Urias will cover third base and bat seventh versus right-hander Nathan Eovaldi on Wednesday.--Andy WebbSource: mlb.com

Boston Red Sox relief pitcher Brennan Bernardino will serve as the opener ahead of Wednesday's game against the Cincinnati Reds. The Red Sox have decided to go bullpen-game after having Brayan Bello pitch during the resumption of Tuesday's suspended contest. Bernardino figures to throw an inning before handing the ball off to Cooper Criswell who will pitch the bulk of the innings. Criswell doesn't offer enough upside to warrant streaming on Wednesday.--Andy WebbSource: Jen McCaffrey

ESPN's Adam Teicher writes that judging from how rookie seventh-round running back Brashard Smith was used in offseason practices, the Kansas City Chiefs have plans for him. The 22-year-old ran a 4.39-second 40-yard dash at the scouting combine and could fit in nicely with other offensive skill players on the team, including receivers Xavier Worthy and Marquise Brown and running back Elijah Mitchell. Smith was a receiver in college before moving to a RB at SMU in his final season, and the Chiefs got him the ball out of the backfield, from the slot and split out wide during spring workouts. Head coach Andy Reid knows a little something about finding ways to use speedy offensive weapons, so fantasy managers shouldn't complete turn away from Smith, even though it will be hard for him to secure a big role in his first year in the NFL.--Keith HernandezSource: ESPN.com - Adam Teicher

New York Islanders left wing Emil Heineman has signed a two-year, $2.2 million contract with the team. The Islanders acquired the restricted free agent from the Montreal Canadiens last week and now have him under contract for at least a couple of seasons. Islanders general manager Mathieu Darche has said that the team sees "a lot of potential" in Heineman, who had his rookie campaign in the NHL last season with the Canadiens. He finished the year with 18 points (10 goals, eight assists) and 173 hits in 62 games. Heineman is expected to start next season on the fourth line but could move up in the lineup if he performs well enough.--Taavi PailkSource: Ethan Sears

Cincinnati Reds corner infielder Christian Encarnacion-Strand (foot) is out of the starting lineup ahead of Wednesday's game against the Boston Red Sox. This is basically a doubleheader for the two teams who resumed play of a suspended game earlier in the day. During that game, Encarnacion-Strand fouled a ball off his foot which resulted in him exiting the contest. As a result, the Reds are going to play it safe and hold him out of the second game. It's unclear if Encarnacion-Strand will require additional testing, but for now fantasy managers should consider him day-to-day. Spencer Steer and Santiago Espinal will cover the corner infield spot on Wednesday night.--Andy WebbSource: mlb.com

Cincinnati Reds first baseman Spencer Steer (hand) is in the starting lineup for Wednesday's game against the Boston Red Sox. This is basically a doubleheader for the two teams who resumed play of a suspended game earlier in the day. During that game, Steer was hit in the hand by a pitch in the seventh inning. Despite that, Steer is in the lineup for the nightcap. He did experience swelling in his hand, but will play again just hours after getting hit. Steer finished the first game 1-for-2 with a home run and two RBI in the loss. He'll bat fifth and cover first base versus left-hander Brennan Bernardino for Game 2.--Andy WebbSource: mlb.com

New York Islanders winger Simon Holmstrom has agreed to a two-year contract extension. After signing a one-year deal worth $850,000 last summer, Holmstrom received a substantial pay raise, with his new contract valued at $7.25 million and coming with an average annual value of $3.625 million. The 24-year-old earned the big boost in salary with an impressive campaign. He amassed a career-high 45 points (20 goals, 25 assists) in 75 games. Holmstrom will aim to become a 50-point scorer next season while maintaining a middle-six role.--Taavi PailkSource: Sportsnet

Tennessee Titans linebacker Cody Barton has already become a mentor to the team's young inside linebackers, especially second-year linebacker James Williams, according to ESPN's Turron Davenport. Barton is proving to be a much-needed savvy veteran for the Titans after signing a three-year deal worth $21 million in free agency this offseason. The 28-year-old has been a vocal presence on the field during offseason workouts for a Titans defense that struggled in coverage in 2024 and often found themselves out of position. He's been useful in IDP fantasy formats each of the last three seasons with three different teams -- Seattle, Washington and Denver -- racking up a combined 363 tackles (204 solo). Barton had an expanded role with the Broncos in 2024 and will likely be counted on to play an every-down role in Tennessee.--Keith HernandezSource: ESPN.com - Turron Davenport

New York Mets relief pitcher Huascar Brazoban has been named the opener for Wednesday's Game 2 of the doubleheader against the Milwaukee Brewers. Brazoban figures to throw an inning or two before handing the ball off to Blade Tidwell for the bulk of the innings. This is the third time that the Mets have used Brazoban as an opener this season. He won't be a recommended streaming option, especially considering he was tagged for four earned runs during his most recent outing. Tidwell has been hit around quite a bit as well, so fantasy managers should avoid this situation.--Andy WebbSource: Manny Gomez

Defenseman Nate Schmidt has signed a three-year, $10.5 million contract with the Utah Mammoth. The veteran blue-liner switches teams for the second consecutive offseason, having joined the Florida Panthers on a one-year, $800,000 contract 12 months ago. It turned out to be one of the best decisions Schmidt has made in his life, as he won the Stanley Cup with the Panthers. Schmidt impressed during the postseason with a 12-point effort across 23 games. During the regular season, he picked up 19 points (five goals, 14 assists) in 80 contests. Schmidt appears to be a good addition for Utah but probably won't have a big impact in fantasy hockey.--Taavi PailkSource: NHL.com

Jacksonville Jaguars cornerback Montaric Brown worked with the starters during offseason workouts and consistently made plays during spring practices, including two end-zone pass breakups in red-zone drills in minicamp. ESPN's Michael DiRocco writes that he has the advantage heading into training camp as a starter opposite Tyson Campbell. Second-year corner Jarrian Jones played well at nickel late in his rookie season, but he's still learning the zone scheme, which is expected to be a staple of defensive coordinator Anthony Campanile's scheme. In addition to Jones needing plenty of schooling on the zone scheme, the Jaguars are still working through how many defensive snaps per game they'll be able to get out of rookie first-rounder Travis Hunter. Brown, 25, is also coming off a career year in 2024 in which he had 75 tackles (55 solo), six tackles for loss, an interception and eight pass breakups in 17 games.--Keith HernandezSource: ESPN.com - Michael DiRocco

Winger Brandon Tanev has joined the Utah Mammoth on a three-year, $7.5 million contract. The 10-year NHL veteran was available as a free agent after spending the 2024-25 season with the Seattle Kraken and Winnipeg Jets. He finished the campaign with 22 points (10 goals, 12 assists) in 79 games, dishing out 168 hits. Tanev has averaged almost three hits per game throughout his career and will bring physicality to the Utah lineup. With nearly 100 career goals to his name, Tanev has also proved that he can chip in offensively at times.--Taavi PailkSource: Sportsnet

The Detroit Tigers recalled outfielder Justyn-Henry Malloy from Triple-A Toledo on Wednesday and optioned right-hander Dylan Smith to Toledo after Game 1 of their doubleheader against the Washington Nationals. Malloy will serve as the designated hitter and will bat leadoff in Game 2 of the doubleheader on Wednesday against Nationals left-hander MacKenzie Gore. The Tigers sent Malloy down to the farm earlier this year after he was hitting .215 with a homer, 16 RBI, 13 runs and 31 strikeouts in 115 plate appearances. The 25-year-old responded by slashing .321/.491/.444 with two home runs, 17 RBI, 18 runs scored and three steals for the Mud Hens in 24 games played. The former sixth-rounder by the Atlanta Braves in 2021 has barely hit over .200 in 116 big-league games the last two years, but he could see some playing time against lefties in Detroit now that he's rejoined the team.--Keith HernandezSource: Tigers PR

The New Jersey Devils have picked up right wing Evgenii Dadonov in free agency on a one-year contract. The Russian veteran inked a $1 million deal with the Devils, but the total value of his contract could rise with performance bonuses. Before hitting the open market, Dadonov enjoyed a good two-and-a-half-year spell with the Dallas Stars. He finished the 2024-25 campaign with 20 goals and 40 points in 80 games. Last season, New Jersey ranked 20th in scoring, and adding Dadonov should boost the team's offense.--Taavi PailkSource: Sportsnet

Goaltender Alex Lyon has signed a two-year, $3 million deal with the Buffalo Sabres as a free agent. The 32-year-old will pack his bags after playing two seasons with the Detroit Red Wings. Lyon posted a solid 14-9-1 record with 26 starts last term, allowing 2.81 goals with a .896 save percentage. The Sabres have made a significant investment in Ukko-Pekka Luukkonen and have an exciting goalie prospect in Devon Levi, meaning Lyon faces a battle for playing time in Buffalo.--Taavi PailkSource: NHL.com
