Packers Restructure Robert Tonyan's Deal
4 years agoThe Green Bay Packers made a rare maneuver with tight end Robert Tonyan, treating most of his $3.384 million restricted free-agent tender as a bonus for salary cap purposes. They added four voidable years and saved close to $1.9 million on this year's salary cap in doing so. Green Bay has cleared around $4.4 million total in the last week, an indication that they're planning on quarterback Aaron Rodgers being on the team in 2021. If they were to trade Rodgers, it would free up over $16 million in salary cap space. Tonyan had 52 catches for 586 yards and 11 touchdowns (tied for the league high at the position) in a breakout season last year, but the potential for not having Rodgers throwing him passes in 2021 makes him a bit risky. Tonyan is unlikely to come near his touchdown total from last season, but if Rodgers returns, he should be a borderline top-10 fantasy TE.
