New York Islanders defenseman Matthew Schaefer recorded his first career three-point game in Sunday's 5-4 victory over the Florida Panthers. The 18-year-old contributed two goals and an assist, becoming the third-youngest defenseman in league history to record a three-point game. He is now the fourth rookie blue-liner to score 20 goals in a season, while Denis Potvin was previously the only defenseman to reach 20 goals with the Islanders. Schaefer has exceeded expectations in his first year in the league, recording 44 points (20 goals, 24 assists), 146 shots, 84 blocks, and a plus-14 rating in 61 outings. He has a legitimate shot at reaching 60 points, something only 10 rookie defensemen have ever accomplished.--Taavi Pailk
