Matthew Boyd Excellent in Victory
Matthew Boyd (6-3) pitched a gem Saturday to notch his sixth win of the season. Boyd led the Cubs to a 2-1 victory with six innings of one-run ball. He allowed only one hit, a first-inning solo home run by outfielder Andrew McCutchen, and tallied three strikeouts against one walk. It was the fourth straight quality start for Boyd, who has given up a mere four earned runs in 25 1/3 innings since May 28. Overall, Boyd has recorded a 2.79 ERA (3.46 xERA) with 73 strikeouts and 19 walks in 80 2/3 frames. Although Boyd didn't hit the 80-inning mark in any season from 2020-24, the Cubs took a two-year, $29 million gamble on him in free agency. The results have been great so far. Boyd will take the ball next against one of his former teams, the Seattle Mariners, on Friday.
