Marcus Semien's Market Heating Up
4 years agoThe Philadelphia Phillies, Cincinnati Reds, Boston Red Sox and Oakland Athletics have all been involved in negotiations with free-agent shortstop Marcus Semien, according to team sources. More teams are likely interested due to Semien's versatility, athleticism and versatility, and his strong postseason also helped him. With Xander Bogaerts at shortstop, the Red Sox are likely looking at the 30-year-old as a second baseman. He struggled to a .223/.305/.374 slash line with seven home runs in 2020, but he went 11-for-27 (.407) with two homers and a 1.151 OPS in the playoffs and finished third in the American League MVP voting in 2019 when he produced a 8.9 Wins Above Replacement. Boston, Philly and Cincinnati would all present much better hitting environments than in Oakland, where Semien spent the last six years of his career. Don't overlook him despite a poor regular season in 2020.
