Luis Robert Continues To Improve
4 years agoChicago White Sox outfielder Luis Robert, who was having trouble making consistent contact through the latter part of his rookie season, has taken steps to resolve that issue in 2021. He swings at four of every five pitches he sees in the strike zone, one of the highest rates in the game, and in 2020 his contact rate on pitches in the zone was only 68.3 percent -- third-worst of eligible hitters. Robert has raised that rate to 82.2 percent this year, giving him the biggest percentage-point increase on in-zone contact rate from last year to this year. His power has yet to show, but homers should come if he continues to hit the ball hard -- his maximum exit velocity of 113.6 mph ranks in the 94th percentile. The 23-year-old has also cut down on his swing-and-miss numbers against fastballs, breaking balls and offspeed pitches in the zone. It's why his expected batting average against all pitch types are up across the board. Robert snapped a five-game hitting streak on Sunday, but he's still slashing .305/.356/.463 with a 135 OPS+, eight doubles, one triple, one home run, six RBI and four steals in 21 games so far this season.
