Jose Leclerc To Open, Drew Smyly To Follow Wednesday
6 years agoTexas Rangers relief pitcher Jose Leclerc will serve as the opener on Wednesday against the Mariners, with Drew Smyly following and pitching the bulk of the innings. The 25-year-old Leclerc was demoted from the closer role after a tough first month of the season and has a 5.48 ERA, 1.45 WHIP, 35 strikeouts and 14 walks in his 21 1/3 innings over 22 appearances, although he has been better in May. Leclerc has no fantasy value in the opener role and it doesn't seem inevitable that he'll take back the closing duties from Shawn Kelley anytime soon. Smyly is 1-3 on the year with a scary 6.15 ERA, 1.69 WHIP and 24 walks in 33 2/3 innings. He's always a volatile streamer when on the bump.
