Jays Extend Qualifying Offer To Marcus Semien
3 years agoThe Toronto Blue Jays extended a one-year, $18.4 million qualifying offer to second baseman Marcus Semien on Saturday. The middle infielder will become a free agent if he rejects the offer. Semien had an excellent season in Toronto in 2021, slashing .265/.334/.538 with 45 home runs, 102 RBI and 15 stolen bases, so he's likely to decline the qualifying offer and look to cash in on the open market with a long-term deal. His 45 long balls set a single-season record for home runs by a second baseman. Semien is a year younger than D.J. LeMahieu was when he signed a six-year, $90 million deal to stay with the New York Yankees last year. With the ability to play shortstop, too, Semien will be in high demand, with the Blue Jays, Chicago White Sox and Colorado Rockies potentially being at the top of his suitor list.
