J.T. Realmuto 2022 Player Outlook: Expensive Cost For Decaying Offensive Production
J.T. Realmuto was once again solid at a weak position, slashing .263/.343/.439 with 17 HRs, 13 stolen bases, 73 RBI, and 64 runs in 134 games, third-most by a catcher. His offense did decline, though. He hit 25 HRs in 2019 and 11 in 47 games during the 2020 season, and his batting average has gotten worse the past two seasons and reached the lowest mark since 2015. His 2020 production might fool some, considering the best power output of his career was aided by a 23.4% HR/FB, and his .246 xBA was 20 points below his actual average. He still hits the ball hard, placing in the 72nd percentile for HardHit%, but his sweet spot rate took a dip for the third consecutive season at 31.2%, and his Barrel% was his lowest since 2017 at 8.6%. He got on base an above-average rate again, thanks to an 8.9 BB%, and Realmuto's sprint speed is still elite- 91st percentile- so the only thing standing in the way of double-digit steals is his aggressiveness. However, his fading offensive ability looks real. His ability to contribute more than most catchers in four categories makes him a top-3 fantasy player at the position. However, his current ADP of 54 isn't worth it, especially since Daulton Varsho, who can equal his stolen base total, is 47 picks behind him.
