Custer actually qualified solidly -- both times last year in the top-20 (12th and 16th). Unfortunately, he rear-ended and crashed out in those appearances. The young racer's inexperience at Daytona has shown and shown often. Later in the races, he had problems maintaining track position and that lack of awareness may have contributed to him not being able to finish at the racetrack.
