Cleveland Re-Signs Cesar Hernandez
4 years agoCleveland agreed to an undisclosed deal to re-sign second baseman Cesar Hernandez on Tuesday, according to a source. Hernandez signed a one-year deal with the Tribe last year and hit .283 with three home runs and an American League-leading 20 doubles while also winning the Gold Glove Award at second base. The deal includes a team option for the 2022 season and is pending a physical. His first seven years were with the Phillies. In his last full season in Philadelphia in 2019, Hernandez hit .279 with 14 home runs, nine stolen bases and 71 RBI. With Hernandez back in the fold, Cleveland has both Amed Rosario and Andres Gimenez, whom they acquired in the Francisco Lindor trade from the Mets, with only one of them now slated for everyday playing time at shortstop now that Hernandez is back at the keystone. The 30-year-old Hernandez is mostly useful for his speed and on-base skills with some modest pop at 2B, making him a target as middle infield depth in deep mixed leagues.
