Is Joe Mixon out for the season? When is Joe Mixon coming back? The latest Joe Mixon injury update and fantasy football outlook heading into Week 4 of 2025.
Houston Texans running back Joe Mixon has yet to take the field this season as he has been dealing with a foot/ankle injury since the middle of July. However, the team has yet to provide any concrete update on his status, which is not a good sign for his long-term outlook.
With Mixon sidelined, Nick Chubb has taken the lead role, but rookie Woody Marks has begun to carve out a prominent role as the No. 2.
Will Mixon play again this season? Should fantasy managers stash him on their bench? Let's dive in!

Is Joe Mixon Out for the 2025 Season?
While the 29-year-old is still on the reserve list and eligible to return in Week 5, it does not appear Mixon will be on track to his return date. Since being placed on the reserve/non-football injury list, the team has yet to provide an update on their top running back.
In addition, Mixon has yet to return to practice, which is not a positive sign regarding his outlook.
Managers should continue to monitor his status, but should not expect Mixon to return anytime soon. While he remains a solid stash option in IR slots in deeper formats, managers in shallower 10-team leagues should not stash him on their bench as he's not guaranteed to return to action anytime soon.
As a result, managers should continue to expect Chubb to lead the Houston backfield.

Joe Mixon 2025 Fantasy Football Outlook
While Mixon is still a viable stash option (only in IR-eligible formats), the veteran running back does not carry much fantasy value for the time being. Without a clear timeline, managers in shallower formats should feel comfortable releasing Mixon from their rosters. Even if Mixon is able to return to the season, there is no guarantee he will be as productive as he was in 2024, given the significant time he has missed.
While he has been sidelined, the Texans have turned to Chubb to lead the backfield. Through three games, Chubb has seen the majority of the work in the backfield, logging 34 attempts for 144 yards and a score.
However, in their Week 3 loss to the Jaguars, Chubb began to cede work to the rookie Marks. In this game, Chubb logged only 51% of the snaps, while Marks saw the other 49%.
Even though Chubb remains the favorite to lead the team in snaps, Marks has become an intriguing high-upside stash option. He has made a strong push to take over the starting job, given Chubb's modest start, and could emerge as a viable starting option during the second half.
