Is Joe Mixon out for the season? When is Joe Mixon coming back? The latest Joe Mixon injury update and fantasy football outlook heading into Week 2 of 2025.
Houston Texans running back Joe Mixon spent the entire 204 season working as the primary workhorse in the Houston backfield. Mixon enjoyed a productive campaign but has been dealing with injuries to begin 2025.
Shortly before the regular season, the Texans placed Mixon on the NFI-reserve list due to a foot injury, which will keep him sidelined for at least the first four games. However, the team has not provided many updates since shifting him to the reserve list.
Will Mixon play again this season? Should fantasy managers stash him on their bench? Let's dive in!

Is Joe Mixon Out for the 2025 Season?
Even though Mixon will miss the first four games of this season, the veteran running back appears to be in serious danger of missing the vast majority of the season.
When asked about his long-term availability this season, Texans general manager Nick Caserio did not provide much detail, which is not a positive sign. While Mixon could eventually return to practice, seeing that the front office does not have a defined timetable suggests that Mixon will likely miss the majority of the upcoming season.
In fact, given his current status, Mixon could be in danger of sitting out the entire season. Seeing that he has yet to take the practical field, even in a limited capacity, does not bode well for his fantasy outlook this season.

Joe Mixon 2025 Fantasy Football Outlook
Fantasy managers should continue to monitor his status, but should begin to look for an alternative solution if they are waiting for Mixon to return. Given that the team has not provided any definitive update on his status, this injury could limit him throughout the remainder of the season.
In Week 1, the Texans ended heavily on veteran Nick Chubb, who signed to a one-year deal in the offseason. Dameon Pierce, Dare Ogunbowale, and rookie Woody Marks filed as the depth options behind the former Brown.
Despite not being the most effective runner in the league (4.1 YPC), Mixon was still a strong RB2 in all leagues last season, as he posted his second-straight 1,000-yard campaign, totaling 1,016 yards and 11 touchdowns on 245 carries. In the receiving game, Mixon added 309 yards with another touchdown.
Managers looking to add a running back in Houston to their roster should prioritize Chubb, as he appears to be the team's primary solution to their lead role. However, Pierce, Ogunbowale, and Marks could eventually see a larger role as Chubb has already dealt with numerous injuries throughout his career.
Managers in shallow leagues without IR spots should feel comfortable dropping Mixon this week. While he is fine stash in leagues that have IR spots, managers should instead opt to use that spot on players with a more defined timeline, like Brandon Aiyuk (knee), George Kittle (hamstring), or Jalen Coker (quadriceps).
