Bengals running back (RB) Giovanni Bernard is a fantasy football waiver wire pickup to target as a free agent addition for Week 4 of the 2020 NFL season.

ANALYSIS: Giovani Bernard has been a fixture in the Cincinnati Bengals backfield since 2013, and while the cast of surrounding characters has changed dramatically, his job description has largely remained the same. Even though Joe Mixon has taken up the vast majority of carries out of the running game, Joe Burrow has started his career off by throwing an exuberant amount, and that has worked greatly in Bernard's benefit.
Over the first three weeks, Gio has only gotten two carries, good for ten yards rushing. However, through the first two weeks against the Chargers and Browns, he saw 12 targets, nine receptions, and 43 yards combined. This week, in a close game against Philadelphia, he saw a reduced three targets, but he caught all three balls and amassed a season-high 55 yards receiving. Bernard has been the primary pass-catching back for Cincinnati, as Mixon has seen just nine targets for the first three weeks (and 52 carries for comparison). It's a hard year to be a backup running back in a pass-heavy offense, but Giovani Bernard has made a career catching short-gain passes in volume, and with Burrow slinging with quantity in every showing thus far, Bernard should be a sought-after option in deeper leagues that reward receptions.
