NHL DFS Analysis and Picks for 11/14/23

We have finally made it! The 2023-2024 season is upon us and we welcome the next generational talent, Connor Bedard to the front and center! With many big moves over the offseason – Karlsson to Pittsburgh – and many signings during Free Agency, this season will make for yet another interesting race to Lord Stanley!

Tonight we have a 9-game slate and two teams playing on a  back-to-back: Islanders & Columbus. The currently live top-3 highest implied team totals are: Florida with 4.1, Dallas with 4 and Pittsburgh with 3.7. I will do my best to guide you through this nine-game slate on DraftKings and FanDuel starting at 7:00 p.m. EDT.

DISCLOSURE: Make sure to monitor the NHL news feeds for the latest player status and injury news.

DraftKings and FanDuel Goalies - NHL DFS Picks

Sam Montembeault - DK $7.4K || FD $7.6K

Opponent - Calgary Flames

Montreal as a club is not in the best form right now, however, their goaltending is keeping them above water more often than not. In Montembeault’s last five games he has been under .910 Save Percentage just once – 6-3 loss to Vegas –. Furthermore, in the netminder’s last five performances, he has hit double-digit fantasy points in four of the five games, while only winning two games in that stretch. It is very clear that Montembeault is a pure floor play due to his save volume and with both the Canadiens being in the bottom ten in Shots Against Per 60 and the Flames being in the top ten in Shots For Per 60, things bode well for Montembeault to have another high-save performance with the potential of hitting the Save Bonus on DraftKings.

Others To Consider (Cash/GPP):

  • Hill (DK $8.1K || FD $8.8K)
  • Hellebuyck (DK $7.8K || FD $7.4K)

DraftKings and FanDuel Centers - NHL DFS Picks

Sidney Crosby - DK $8K || FD $9.3K

Opponent - Columbus Blue Jackets

Crosby and the Kids or more like Crosby and the Oldies are coming into Columbus against projected starter Elvis Merzlikins who happens to be the second-worst goalie on the slate in Goals Saved Above Expected Per 60 – including all goalies who have played 120 minutes or more this season –. Furthermore, the Blue Jackets are the fifth-worst in both Shots Against Per 60 and Scoring Chances Against Per 60, as well as the third-worst in Goals Against Per 60. In Crosby’s last five games, he has 2 goals, 4 assists, 23 shots and 3 blocked shots. With an eight-game point streak, Crosby will have every opportunity to extend it to nine games tonight in Columbus.

Sam Bennett - DK $5.8K || FD $4.5K

Opponent - San Jose Sharks

Okay, let’s try this again. Sam Bennett makes his second return to the lineup after being held out of the lineup to start the season due to an injury in preseason. He then made his season debut in a game against Boston at the end of October to only hurt his leg colliding into the goal seven minutes into the game. In his first full performance this season, he had 2 blocked shots in a 4-3 win over Chicago two days ago. The trio of Verhaeghe-Bennett-Tkachuk has proven to be formidable and almost matchup-proof last season. In a game against the league’s record-setting worst team, Bennett and company are expected to light the lamp a few times.

Others To Consider (CASH/GPP):

  • Duchene (DK $4.9K || FD $6.2K)
  • Amadio (DK $2.9K || FD $3.9K)

DraftKings and FanDuel Wings - NHL DFS Picks

Carter Verhaeghe - DK $5.6K || FD $6.4K

Opponent - San Jose Sharks

Staying with Florida, we have the least expensive of the two wingers who play with the aforementioned Sam Bennett, Carter Verhaeghe. Verhaeghe has been enjoying his start to the season and more so his recent form, amassing 3 goals, 3 assists, 20 shots and 3 blocked shots throughout his last five performances. San Jose is the worst team in every category, making this a rather predictable performance for the winger. If there is salary left over, linemate Matthew Tkachuk is just as capable of having a big night, however, as mentioned, he requires more salary.

Brandon Saad - DK $3.6K || FD $3.7K

Opponent - Tampa Bay Lightning

After some not-so-positive remarks were made about Saad in our Rotoballer chat – all jokingly of course –, Saad has turned it up a notch. In his last five games, he has 1 goal, 2 assists, 12 shots and 1 blocked shot. His peripherals are not stellar, however, he is not the primary shooter on his line anymore and he plays a complementary role to linemate Jordan Kyrou. That being said, expected starter Jonas Johansson is the fifth-worst goalie on the slate in Goals Saved Above Expected Per 60 and the Lightning are currently the sixth-worst in Shots Against Per 60 and the second-worst in Goals Against Per 60. The second line for the Blues has the best matchup for the club tonight, leaving Saad with the potential for a big game.

Others To Consider (CASH/GPP):

  • Guentzel (DK $7.5K || FD $8.4K)
  • Marchessault (DK $6.7K || FD $5.9K)

DraftKings and FanDuel Defensemen - NHL DFS Picks

Gustav Forsling - DK $4K || FD $4.7K

Opponent - San Jose Sharks

Unfortunately, Oliver Ekman-Larsson’s salary has finally hit the skyrocket button after a multitude of good performances. If the salary is there, he is still a value defenseman due to his matchup. However, we will focus on his partner, Gustav Forsling. Forsling has 1 goal, 3 assists, 14 shots, and 8 blocked shots in his last five performances. As a top pairing defender and quarterbacking the second power-play unit, Forsling is the next-best option on the blueline in what should be a three or four goal outing for the Panthers.

Owen Power - DK $3.6K || FD $4.9K

Opponent - Buffalo Sabres

Owen Power has been secretly putting together a handful of strong performances. Within his last five games, he has 2 assists, 8 shots and 11 blocked shots. Despite him only hitting the Blocked Shots bonus twice in that span, each game he has the chance due to his role on the penalty kill. In a matchup with the Boston Bruins, Power will have an opportunity to hit value from peripherals alone and anything else will be a bonus.

Others To Consider (CASH/GPP):

  • Severson (DK $3.5K || FD $4.3K)
  • Perunovich (DK $2.5K || FD $3.5K)
