ANALYSIS: Jonnu Smith has been the man at tight end for the top-tier Tennessee Titans squad so far this season, with Anthony Firkser serving as second-fiddle during Smith's breakout season. However, with Smith being held out of the Titans' last contest against the Texans, Firkser found the opportunity to shine and capitalized greatly, catching eight passes out of nine targets for 113 yards and a touchdown, while participating in 41 total offensive snaps (55%).
Although Jonnu Smith's injury is considered to be minor and he could likely take the field this week against the high-powered Steelers, that doesn't mean that it's time to forget about Firkser just yet.
Firkser has had two dud-performances so far in 2020, catching two passes out of two targets in Week One for a mere five yards, and being completely absent as a pass-catcher in Week Three against the Vikings, though he at least saw the field for 40% and 25% of the Titans' snaps on offense in those weeks, respectively. In Tennessee's Week Two and Week Four matchups against the Jaguars and Bills, Firkser stepped into a more aggressive role as a pass-catcher alongside Smith, catching a combined seven passes out of nine targets for 64 yards, while taking part in 37 offensive snaps overall.
It may be surprising, but the former Harvard tight end is currently fourth on the Titans in targets, fourth in receiving yards, and tied for third in receptions, mostly trailing the likes of Smith, Corey Davis, Adam Humphries, and A.J. Brown in these categories. While that may be due to the fact that Anthony Firkser has played in all five games, being on the field is a huge part of the battle, and with his monstrous showing this past week against Houston, he may have just earned a more prominent role in Ryan Tannehill's passing game moving forward.
