San Francisco 49ers running back (RB) Elijah Mitchell is a fantasy football waiver wire pickup to target as a free-agent addition for Week 2 of the 2020 NFL season.
BALLER MOVE: Add in All Leagues
OWNED IN: 6% of Leagues
ANALYSIS: Who would have told? Elijah Mitchell, a sixth-rounder out of Louisiana who had to watch Trey Sermon getting drafted three rounds earlier than him, got the chance to play in San Fran's backfield on Sunday after reportingly edging Sermon through the pre-season, earning that RB2 role. And Mitchell took the bull by the horns, doubled down on the opportunity given Raheem Mostert's injury, and never looked back.
With Mostert logging just four healthy snaps and Sermon in the shelf inactive, Mitchell saw the doors open widely in front of him. The result? A debut in which Mitch put up 104 rushing yards on 19 (!) carries for an average of 5.5 YPC and a single touchdown. The Lions couldn't do a thing to stop this man, and even though he nor we can't complain about the 16.4 FP on the day, he could have racked up way more had JaMycal Hasty not scored his TD on his single attempt of the game.
The latest reports coming from 49ers' reporters seem to indicate that Mostert has dodged the ACL bullet. In any case, it's reasonable to think about Mitchell taking on the RB1 role going forward until Mostert is fully available again, with Trey Sermon getting activated if only to enter the backup rotation along with JaMycal Hasty. Mitchell, though, was able to win the RB2 role in the preseason by himself and his first pro game showed what he's capable of. We expect Mitchell to be the most-rostered player off the Week 1 WW, so make sure you snatch him before everybody else has a chance... if you can.
