ANALYSIS: Washington Commanders running back Chris Rodriguez Jr. has rarely been given consistent looks throughout his two-year NFL career, but could be in store for a breakout season in Year 3. In 2024, Rodriguez was typically deployed as a change-of-pace option as he carried the ball just 35 times for 173 yards. He punched in two scores as well.
During his first two seasons, Rodriguez posted an impressive 4.8 YPC and 4.9 YPC, respectively. Despite his elite efficiency, the Commanders never gave him consistent opportunities, as he was constantly deployed behind Brian Robinson Jr., Austin Ekeler, and Jeremy McNichols.
However, with Robinson now in San Francisco, Rodriguez faces less competition for work. In the draft, the Commanded added seventh-round rookie Jacory Croskey-Merritt, but according to their first depth chart, Rodriguez is listed above him. However, Croskey-Merritt is expected to see his role grow given his impressive preseason.
On their depth chart, Rodriguez is slated to be the No. 3 running back behind McNichols and Ekeler. Despite his high efficiency marks, Rodriguez will likely continue to see his upside significantly limited due to the nature of the community approach in the backfield.
As a result, Rodriguez is best reserved as a low-end RB3 in deep 14+ team leagues in Week 1. If Rodriguez can emerge as the No.2 option behind Ekeler, he could enter high-floor flex territory later in the season.
