Week 1 Fantasy Football Kicker News and Outlooks
Brandon Aubrey, Dallas Cowboys
Dallas Cowboys kicker Brandon Aubrey should be inserted into fantasy managers' starting lineups despite a difficult matchup against the Philadelphia Eagles in Week 1. Kicking on the road isn't easy, especially when the venue doesn't have a roof. However, Aubrey has repeatedly shown that he can nail long kicks in difficult conditions. Although he went 0-for-1 on field goals in Philadelphia last year, that came during a rough period of time when Dak Prescott was sidelined.
He looked better when the Cowboys hosted the Eagles, going 2-for-2 on field goals with a successful 46-yarder. The biggest reason why you should start Aubrey, though, is his track record. He has been either K1 or K2 in each of his two NFL seasons, and Aubrey, in an unfavorable venue, is still better than many kickers in the serenity of a dome. Philadelphia's defense may limit Dallas' red-zone opportunities, but the Cowboys' kicker should still have several opportunities to add points via field goals. Start him with confidence in Week 1.
Tyler Loop, Baltimore Ravens
Baltimore Ravens rookie kicker Tyler Loop has a tall task of replacing seven-time Pro Bowler Justin Tucker, but NFL.com's Bucky Brooks writes that Loop "appears to be well on his way to becoming a household name as a long-distance scorer with unlimited range." Loop made 81.8 percent of his field-goal attempts during the regular season and also made a 61-yarder.
He made all eight of his extra-point attempts and heads into his first NFL season as a "model of consistency," which is what head coach John Harbaugh expects at the position. The 24-year-old sixth-rounder definitely has the leg to succeed at this level, and in one of the best offenses in the league, he could be on the fantasy radar in 12-team leagues before long, too. Right now, though, RotoBaller has Loop ranked as the No. 19 fantasy kicker with Week 1 just a week away.
Riley Patterson, Miami Dolphins
The Miami Dolphins officially signed free-agent kicker Riley Patterson to their practice squad on Wednesday, according to Tom Pelissero of NFL Network. Patterson is expected to be elevated to kick against the Indianapolis Colts in Week 1 of the regular season on Sunday, Sept. 7, in place of the injured Jason Sanders (hip). The Dolphins put Sanders on short-term Injured Reserve on Tuesday, meaning he'll miss at least the first four games of the 2025 season.
The 25-year-old Patterson will get a shot to fill in as Miami's kicker until Sanders returns, although he won't really be a starting kicking option in 12-team fantasy leagues. Patterson has already kicked for five different teams in his four NFL seasons and has made 85.1% of his 74 field-goal attempts and 96.5% of his 112 extra-point tries. He's gone just 4-for-9 from 50-plus yards out.
Dustin Hopkins, Free Agent
The Cleveland Browns released kicker Dustin Hopkins last Tuesday, according to Adam Schefter of ESPN. It appears that Andre Szmyt will open the 2025 regular season as the team's placekicker, although the Browns could still bring in more competition before Week 1.
Hopkins will be let go after spending the last two seasons kicking for Cleveland, where he went 51-for-63 on his field-goal attempts (81%) and 41-for-46 on his extra-point tries in 31 total games. The final straw for the 34-year-old veteran might have been when he missed one of his two extra-point tries in the preseason finale on Saturday against the Los Angeles Rams. Hopkins entered training camp on shaky ground at the position after going 18-for-27 on his field goals in 16 games a year ago.
Andy Borregales, New England Patriots
The New England Patriots have named rookie Andy Borregales their starting kicker for 2025 after releasing Parker Romo on Tuesday. A sixth-round draft pick, Borregales arrives from Miami (FL), where he built a strong collegiate résumé by converting 74 of 86 field goals, including an impressive 18-for-19 mark in 2024. While he showed some inconsistency during the preseason, the Patriots are committing to him as their long-term option at the position. New England will be counting on Borregales' leg to stabilize special teams and provide reliability in tight games throughout the season.
Ryan Fitzgerald, Carolina Panthers
Carolina Panthers kicker Ryan Fitzgerald has won the kicking job after the team released Matthew Wright, according to Joe Person of The Athletic. The undrafted rookie out of Florida State went 3-for-3 on field goals and also converted his lone extra point attempt through three preseason games. He enjoyed similar success at school, going 13-for-13 on field goals during his final collegiate campaign in 2024. Although the Panthers' offense is trending up, Fitzgerald lacks fantasy appeal at the moment, especially as a rookie with no track record kicking at the professional level.
Jake Moody, San Francisco 49ers
San Francisco 49ers kicker Jake Moody beat out Greg Joseph in the kicker competition and is set to be the starter. Moody has gone 21-for-24 on kicks throughout training camp, compared to Joseph, who was slightly better at 22-for-24. The 2023 third-round pick has been disappointing so far in his career, making 76.3% of his career field goals. He struggled more in 2024, where he made only 70.6% of his kicks, which ranked fifth lowest among all kickers. He'll open the season with a favorable setup as the 49ers offense projects to be one of the best in football.
