Russell Wilson To Start Season As Giants QB1, But Could Lose Job By Midseason
New York Giants quarterback Russell Wilson is likely to start the year as the QB1 for his team. The problems are that they face the toughest schedule of any team this year, by a solid margin, and that Wilson's own tendencies could do him in. Two games against the Dallas Cowboys, Washington Commanders, and Philadelphia Eagles, and one each against the Kansas City Chiefs, Denver Broncos, and Los Angeles Chargers, as well as the Detroit Lions, are already tough enough. But Wilson refuses to throw the ball over the middle, even when he has open receivers, nearly as much as he should. He was dead last in the league in 2024 in attempts over the intermediate and deep middle of the field. That won't fly, as WR Malik Nabers thrived on those routes, and he's the engine of the offense. Wilson prefers to throw safer passes and take sacks, rather than risk interceptions, so while his stats often look good, the devil is in the details.
