RotoBaller PGA: One And Done Staff Picks - The Farmers Insurance Open

The PGA RotoBaller staff digs into their One and Done selections for The Farmers Insurance Open. Here are some under-the-radar plays and picks for this week's event.

Here at RotoBaller, we are always searching for ways to give our readers the best fantasy sports content possible. With that goal in mind, we are very proud to announce the weekly PGA “One and Done” column will be back for the sixth season.

For an in-depth breakdown of the top DraftKings and FanDuel plays, check out Joe Nicely's weekly Horse For The Course which highlights the best fits for the week's course. And you can also find out who the smart money is on by checking out Spencer Aguiar's PGA DFS: Vegas Report every week.

One and Done Selections - The Farmers Insurance Open

In this feature, our golf staff of Joe Nicely, Spencer Aguiar, Joe Idone, Matt Miller, Byron Lindeque and our special guest will provide their weekly golf picks every Wednesday. The purpose of this article is to present you with alternative options to consider and hopefully make your selection a much easier process weekly. With that plan in mind, let's get started!

Joe Nicely - Jason Day

Alternate -

Alright…we’re firing up Spencer’s boy this week. After a resurgent 2023 in which he won for the first time in five years and scored a runner-up finish in the Open Championship. He’s started off 2024 in solid form, gaining total strokes in each of his starts this year, a T10 at the Sentry, and a T34 in last week’s AmEx.

A two-time Farmers Open winner (2015 & 2018), Day has remained excellent at Torrey Pines in recent years, even as his game was going through an extended rough patch. He's logged three top-seven finishes in the Farmers since his 2018 victory. The Aussie offers a high floor/ceiling combo this week, and though he’ll probably be a popular OAD pick for the Farmers, I’m happy playing the early portion of the schedule by the book.

Yearly Earnings - $170,082
Yearly Cuts Made - 2/2

Joe Idone - Max Homa

Alternate -

I’m going to grab one of the big names off the board this week and take Max Homa as my One and done selection to win the Farmers Insurance Open. It’s no secret Max has loved California Golf, nabbing four of his six career wins within the state of California and he’s going for #5 this week at Torrey Pines.
Homa had a somewhat underrated end to his season last year with positive results that culminated in him being the best performing player on the United States Ryder Cup team. I believe a return home on familiar green surfaces is exactly what the doctor ordered to cure his recent putting woes. While it’s risky taking a big name off the board so early in the season I think this is as good of a spot to take a stand on Homa as any! Back to back baby!

Yearly Earnings -$18,592
Yearly Cuts Made - 1/2

Spencer Aguiar - Tony Finau

Alternate - Jason Day

The days of Tony Finau being a plug-and-play aren't existing at this moment. Ranked all the way down at 26th in the world, the American is better-suited for a smaller payout tournament, which may sound like a wild statement after getting used to him as a top-10 commodity.

I will say that I strategically saved Finau last week to use him at the Farmers Insurance Open. My model didn't give me quite the robust outcome I was expecting after grading eighth overall. However, the weighted tee-to-green acumen stuck out most after diving into his second-place projection inside that area.

The putter continues to be a problem that hasn't found a solution, but the eight top-25 finishes at Torrey Pines should show why he is the ultimate horse for the course. I've always said Finau will win this tournament sometime in his career, so why not this year when we can get him as a somewhat contrarian choice?

Yearly Earnings - $170,082
Yearly Cuts Made - 2/2

Matt Miller - Sahith Theegala

This week I am going to take Sahith Theegala for my One and Done pick. Despite missing the cut at the Sony in his last start, I saw enough out of Theegala in his first start of 2024 to be confident this week. The 26-year-old finished second at the Sentry a few weeks ago to kick off his season and had a great opportunity to win on Sunday. He gained at least one stroke in all major statistical categories, which is a great sign considering it will take a complete game to win this week.
Sahith Theegala has strong California ties, being born in the state and playing collegiate golf at Pepperdine University. In two career starts at this event, Theegala has finished 4th and 25th. The thing I like the most about Theegala this week are his strong putting statistics. He has gained 2.8 strokes putting over his last five tournaments, 2.6 strokes over his last ten and 1.7 over his last 20. That long term success suggests that we can be confident in him this week in that category. Each of the last four winners of this event have gained at least 3.7 strokes putting on the week. Torrey Pines will test guys all weekend with crucial five to ten foot par saves and I want to make sure I have a guy that I feel confident in to make them.

Yearly Earnings - $364,855
Yearly Cuts Made - 2/2

Byron Lindeque - Sahith Theegala

The French have always been stingy with their money, and Matthieu Pavon was no different with his $30k he earned us last week. What a mess of an event last week was. Shout out to those that had had C Bez (unlikely) who came second and cashed the full purse for winning. The irony of the winner of a pro-am being an am, is the third turd that the golfing gods have dropped on us outright bettors to start the year. Unless they were at a chinese buffet, they should be done dropping fudge dragons on us heading to a way more predictable Torrey Pines venue.

With only a pair of starts here, Sahith Theegala will be looking to win the Farmers Insurance Open after finishes of T24 and T4 last year. He won the last tournament he played in California and two starts ago he lipped out a putt to potentially get himself into a playoff with Chris Kirk at the TOC in Hawaii. Theegala sits inside the top-40 in SG OTT the last 24 rounds while the rest of his game ranking 13th, 7th and 12th. We got form. We got local ties. We got course history. All things most of the guys shorter than him on the odds board have. But when Theegala finds himself in the mix, he does not back down, which can’t be said about most of the favorites this week.

Yearly Earnings - $34,020
Yearly Cuts Made - 1/2
