Week 9 Fantasy Football Running Back Outlooks
De'Von Achane, Miami Dolphins
As one of the most consistent options across fantasy football in 2025, running back De'Von Achane should be locked into starting lineups in all formats when his Miami Dolphins take on the Baltimore Ravens on Thursday. The former Texas A&M star has been among the most impressive players in the league this year, given the circumstances. Miami is 2-6, briefly benched its starting quarterback, lost its top receiver to a gruesome knee injury, has barely seen its top tight end play, could move on from its coaching staff, and yet Achane has performed week in and week out.
In PPR formats, Achane has finished no lower than running back No. 17 in eight games, as his solid receiving floor and command of the Miami backfield have made him ultra reliable. Against a Ravens defense ranked 27th against fantasy running backs, Achane should be started confidently in Week 9.
Alvin Kamara, New Orleans Saints
New Orleans Saints running back Alvin Kamara (ankle) was a limited participant during Wednesday's practice session. Kamara played a season-low 51 percent of the offensive snaps during last week's loss to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. It's unclear if that was because the game was a blowout or because Kamara was battling this ankle issue.
It doesn't sound like something that is going to cause Kamara to sit out in Week 9. However, fantasy managers should check back on Thursday and Friday for more updates. Devin Neal (ankle) would be asked to take over as the lead back if Kamara sits out against the Los Angeles Rams this weekend.
Josh Jacobs, Green Bay Packers
Green Bay Packers running back Josh Jacobs (calf) was a limited participant during Wednesday's practice session. This is the second week in a row that Jacobs has dealt with this lingering calf issue. He was able to suit up for Sunday's game against the Pittsburgh Steelers.
Jacobs struggled on the ground as he rushed for 33 yards on 13 attempts, but did find the end zone. Barring any setbacks, Jacobs figures to be ready to go for the Week 9 matchup against the Carolina Panthers. Despite a sluggish game last weekend, Jacobs needs to be plugged in as an RB1.
Tony Pollard, Tennessee Titans
Tennessee Titans running back Tony Pollard (neck) had his reps limited in Wednesday's practice due to a neck injury. Pollard's status for the Week 9 contest on Sunday against the visiting Los Angeles Chargers is now in question, although the fact that he was on the field on Wednesday is a good sign that his injury isn't too serious.
Still, Pollard has been trending down in fantasy in recent weeks after Tyjae Spears returned from an early-season injury. The Titans have every intention of keeping Spears involved out of the backfield, too, which will cap Pollard's fantasy upside the rest of the way. With an injury to boot, the 28-year-old should be considered a low-upside RB3/flex, at best, this weekend if he's active. Not only is Pollard now in a timeshare, but he resides in one of the NFL's least efficient offenses.
Rhamondre Stevenson, New England Patriots
New England Patriots running back Rhamondre Stevenson (toe) is on the Week 9 injury report due to a toe injury that kept him from practicing on Wednesday. It's unclear if his toe injury is serious enough to keep him from playing this Sunday against the Atlanta Falcons, but it's worth noting that Stevenson didn't play in the final seven minutes of the Week 8 blowout win over the Cleveland Browns. It will be a situation that should be monitored closely this week.
If Stevenson is limited or unable to play this weekend, rookie TreVeyon Henderson would be a must-start with RB2 upside as New England's lead back. Despite ball-security issues, Stevenson has remained the Pats' primary RB in 2025, but his toe injury could open the door for Henderson to take over going forward.
MarShawn Lloyd, Green Bay Packers
Green Bay Packers running back MarShawn Lloyd (hamstring) won't be practicing anytime soon, according to head coach Matt LaFleur. Lloyd continues to be an enigma for fantasy owners, as his hype has been consistently derailed by one injury after another.
Lloyd joined the Packers as a third-round pick in 2024, but has appeared in just one career regular-season game, gaining 15 yards on six carries last season. The team will continue to operate with Josh Jacobs and change-of-pace option Emanuel Wilson for the foreseeable future. Jacobs has managed 447 yards and nine touchdowns through seven games.
Rico Dowdle, Carolina Panthers
Carolina Panthers head coach Dave Canales strongly suggested on Monday that Week 9 against the Green Bay Packers "will be the week he ditches the shared carries approach and rides the hot hand and feet of Rico Dowdle," according to Joseph Person of The Athletic. Chuba Hubbard missed some time earlier this year with a calf injury, which coincided with Dowdle having the best two-game stretch by a Panthers running back in team history. Carolina leaned on Hubbard in Canales's first season in 2024.
They gave him a four-year, $33.2 million extension last year, and the Panthers don't want to trade him at this year's deadline. Hubbard will still be involved in the backfield if he's not traded, but Dowdle's production this year -- 5.7 yards per carry, 605 rushing yards, and two touchdowns -- makes him deserving of lead-back duties. Dowdle has earned more work over Hubbard and will be the one with RB2 upside this Sunday against Green Bay.
