Fantasy Football Drop Candidates
Read about fantasy football players to consider dropping for Week 8:
TreVeyon Henderson, RB, New England Patriots
New England Patriots rookie running back TreVeyon Henderson played a season-low 14% of the offensive snaps in the Week 7 blowout win over the Tennessee Titans, and he watched backfield mate Rhamondre Stevenson handle a season-high 75% snap share.
The second-round rookie had a season-low two rushing attempts for five yards and wasn't targeted in the passing game for the first time in seven weeks. Per the Boston Herald's Doug Kyed, offensive coordinator Josh McDaniels said Henderson's lack of involvement was "circumstantial" and that the Ohio State product should see more of a normal role this Sunday against the Cleveland Browns.
The Pats essentially went with the hot hand in Stevenson in Week 7 after he established a nice rhythm as the lead back. Henderson has plenty to work on and is only averaging 3.6 yards per carry in his first NFL season, and right now, there's no clear path for him to unseat Stevenson as the lead back in New England. Henderson will be a tough sell as an RB3/flex in fantasy this week against a stingy Browns defense.
Mason Taylor, TE, New York Jets
New York Jets rookie tight end Mason Taylor (quadriceps) is considered questionable to play in Week 8 on Sunday versus the hosting Cincinnati Bengals, according to Eric Allen of NewYorkJets.com. However, head coach Aaron Glenn feels that Taylor is trending in the right direction to be active on Sunday.
It sounds like the 21-year-old should be able to suit up this weekend, but fantasy managers will want to check back on New York's game-day inactive on Sunday morning just to be sure. With top receiver Garrett Wilson (knee) missing a second straight game, Taylor figures to be heavily involved in the passing game on Sunday if he's active.
In last week's loss to the Carolina Panthers, with Wilson out, Taylor caught three of his five targets for 31 yards. The matchup is a good one against Cincy's defense, but the problem for Taylor is that the Jets' passing game has been almost non-existent this year, and they could be turning to veteran quarterback Tyrod Taylor (knee) in Week 8.
Jaydon Blue, RB, Dallas Cowboys
Dallas Cowboys rookie running back Jaydon Blue has been lightly used over the past few weeks. Blue has seen a limited snap share to start his NFL career, as starting running back Javonte Williams has completely dominated the Dallas backfield to open the season.
Blue has not been heavily involved heading into a Week 8 showdown against the Denver Broncos. Last week, Blue was on the field for just 17% of the Cowboys' offensive plays and has yet to carve out a significant role. With a tough matchup against a Denver defense that ranks inside the top 10 against the run, Blue remains off the fantasy radar.
Even in a more favorable matchup, his limited involvement would make him a risky fantasy play. He should remain on fantasy benches heading into Week 8.
Elic Ayomanor, WR, Tennessee Titans
Tennessee Titans wide receiver Elic Ayomanor will once again be asked to step up with this offense shorthanded this weekend. Top wide receiver Calvin Ridley (hamstring) has been ruled out and will miss his second straight game.
Last week, Ayomanor struggled as he hauled in two of his five targets for 29 yards in the loss to the New England Patriots. The rookie wideout has failed to surpass 30 receiving yards in each of the last three games.
The playing time will be there, but nothing seems to be going right for this Titans offense at the moment. Ayomanor might be able to offer flex value in PPR formats for the Week 8 matchup against the Indianapolis Colts.
Cam Ward, QB, Tennessee Titans
Tennessee Titans quarterback Cameron Ward has been playing better lately, but is still off to a slow start to his rookie campaign. Over the last three games, Ward has thrown for over 220 yards in each of those contests.
The biggest problem is that Ward has thrown an interception in each of the last five contests. The 23-year-old is also missing his top wide receiver in Calvin Ridley (hamstring) again this weekend. It's hard to imagine Ward having much success against the Indianapolis Colts in Week 8.
Due to bye weeks, fantasy managers might have no choice but to start Ward. However, he should be viewed as a low-end option.
