Christian McCaffrey, San Francisco 49ers
The Athletic's Matt Barrows writes that it makes sense for the San Francisco 49ers to lean on running back Christian McCaffrey and tight end George Kittle in the passing game early this season. Barrows also added that if McCaffrey is "not back to his 2023 form, he's pretty close to it." McCaffrey helped many fantasy managers win championships in 2023, when he ran for a career-high and league-high 1,459 yards and 14 touchdowns on 272 carries while also catching 67 passes for 564 yards and another seven scores in 16 regular-season starts.
Unfortunately, CMC got a late start to his 2024 season due to Achilles tendinitis and also injured his knee late in the year. He ultimately played only four games and didn't look like his All-Pro self. McCaffrey is no longer in play for No. 1 overall in fantasy drafts, and although he's ranked fifth among RBs at RotoBaller, he's the biggest risk/reward RB.
TreVeyon Henderson, New England Patriots
New England Patriots rookie running back TreVeyon Henderson "might already be the Patriots' most reliable offensive player" and is earning more touches with each week of camp that goes by, according to Chad Graff of The Athletic. Henderson has been one of the stars of the preseason, recording 50 yards from scrimmage and a touchdown on eight total touches. He also returned a kick for a touchdown in New England's first preseason game.
Henderson figures to split time with veterans Rhamondre Stevenson (undisclosed) and Antonio Gibson when the season begins, assuming Stevenson makes it back from an undisclosed injury that has held him out of recent training camp practices. Even still, Henderson profiles as an RB2 in fantasy due to his explosiveness and receiving ability. If he can ever seize a true lead role in the New England backfield, his potential is sky-high.
Brian Robinson Jr., Washington Commanders
The Washington Commanders excused running back Brian Robinson Jr. from practice on Wednesday as questions centering on his future persist. Head coach Dan Quinn said the Commanders are hoping to have a resolution soon on Robinson, whose tenure with the team appears likely to end via trade or release. In his third season in 2024, the 26-year-old carried the ball 187 times and set career highs in rushing yards (799) and touchdowns (eight), but he has fallen out of favor heading into 2025.
Robinson wasn't with the Commanders for their second preseason game against the Cincinnati Bengals on Monday. Seventh-round rookie Jacory Croskey-Merritt and Chris Rodriguez Jr. handled most of the work in his absence. With Robinson on the outs, Croskey-Merritt, Rodriguez, and veteran Austin Ekeler will all vie for touches this season.
