Miami Dolphins quarterback Tua Tagovailoa had the best year of his career in 2023. He set career highs in completion rate (69.3%), passing yards (4,624), touchdowns (29), and first-down completions (222).
Furthermore, the former Alabama star led the NFL in passing yards last season, totaling 49 more than any other quarterback. Tagovailoa also made his first Pro Bowl team last year.
While other quarterbacks from the 2020 NFL Draft class, like Joe Burrow, Justin Herbert, and Jalen Hurts, signed massive extensions last offseason, Tagovailoa wasn’t offered a long-term contract. However, that will change this offseason.

Should The Miami Dolphins Extend Tua Tagovailoa's Contract This Offseason?
Many believe the Dolphins should wait another year before considering signing Tagovailoa to a long-term extension. While he had an impressive 2023 season, the veteran quarterback struggled in the second half. Yet, Miami has no concerns with their franchise quarterback.
General manager Chris Grier says the team is a strong believer in Tagovailoa. While some fans think the Dolphins are making a mistake locking up the former Alabama star, a long-term deal should get done over the next few months.

What Kind Of Contract Will Tua Tagovailoa Receive This Offseason?
Tagovailoa will always get compared to the other quarterbacks from the 2020 NFL Draft class. Burrow, Herbert, and Hurts all signed massive deals last offseason, paying each over $51 million in average annual value (AAV). Meanwhile, Jordan Love should receive a significant extension this offseason, like Tagovailoa. However, he has one year of starting experience compared to 3.5 for the former Alabama star.
According to Spotrac, they project Tagovailoa will sign a four-year extension worth $220 million this offseason, including $165 million in guaranteed money. If he signs that contract, the former Alabama star would rank tied for first among quarterbacks in average annual value (AAV) with Burrow at $55 million.
Spotrac projects a 4 year, $220M contract extension for #Dolphins QB Tua Tagovailoa, including $105M fully guaranteed at signing, & $165M practically guaranteed through the 2027 season.

Many will be shocked to see Tagovailoa sign a contract on par with Burrow, Herbert, Hurts, and Lamar Jackson. However, the price tag on quarterbacks is growing exponentially. Dak Prescott is expected to see a massive new contract this offseason that could have an average annual value (AAV) of over $60 million a year.
It will be interesting to see what kind of deal Love gets if Tagovailoa signs a four-year extension worth $220 million this offseason.
