San Antonio forward Rudy Gay is a worthy consideration as a fantasy basketball waiver wire pickup heading into Week 4 of the NBA season.

ANALYSIS: Rudy Gay was once a big-time scorer in the league, averaging as many as 20.1 points per game back in 2008 with Memphis, but he has carved out a concrete role over the last four seasons with the Spurs as a high-volume scorer in reduced minutes, though his playing time has gone up from last season (up three minutes to 24.8 over the first eight contests). Gay is currently averaging 13.0 points, 5.0 rebounds, and 1.0 block per game, and has substantially increased his three-point output to 5.9 attempts per contest while still converting at a 34% rate.
The surprisingly zero-time All-Star has been shooting at a solid clip all over, as indicated by his .522 effective field goal percentage and .537 true-shooting percentage, and he appears capable of consistent production in defensive categories, evidenced by what now stands as his career-high block percentage at 3.3%. While there are a few younger Spurs that could see increased minutes in the coming months at Gay's expense, a meaningful eclipse is unlikely, as he loads of experience as an efficient scoring forward off the bench for San Antonio. With the level of production posted by Rudy Gay on both sides of the floor this season, he has clear value in deeper formats.
