RotoBaller NBA Roundup for Friday, October 28th

What Appears In This Article? hide

Thursday brought us four games that ended the offseason for the last few teams in the league. With every team playing, we get some idea of where that team is headed and who is going to be fantasy relevant because that's what matters. I will do my best to recap the game and highlight the players that made a splash and should be monitored for DFS or Standard Leagues.

Let's get rolling.

Editor's Note: New users that sign up on FantasyAces, make a $20 deposit, and enter any game will receive our full season NBA (or NFL) Premium Pass for free (includes DFS Cheat Sheets). Just email [email protected] with your new FantasyAces username - and boom, that's it! We will email you with your Premium Pass.

Game Notes for October 27th, 2016

Washington Wizard 99, Atlanta Hawks 114

  • Dwight Howard will fit nicely in Atlanta -- the 19 rebounds he pulled down in his debut were a sight for sore eyes.  Paul Millsap found perfect spacing and scored 28 points, going 11-20 from the field. Millsap also led the team in assists which makes him a valuable DFS play whose stock is surprisingly rising.
  • The Wizards struggled against the Hawks and John Wall struggled to find a shot. He did his normal thing of dishing out 10 assists, but until the rest of the Wizards find their shots (other than Markieff Morris, who had a great game), Wall needs to have efficient shooting games if the Wizards hope to win. Fantasy-wise, Wall could get increased usage and he has to be ready to rebound from his poor-shooting display to start the season. Markieff Morris is also another solid DFS option as long as his price stays relatively low.

Boston Celtics 99, Chicago Bulls 105

  • Rajon Rondo, Dwyane Wade, and Jimmy Butler will be a scary trio for opponents, as well as fantasy gold. This was the Celtics second game in two days and some of the success could be attributed to Celtics fatigue. Whatever excuses you make for the opposition, Rondo, Wade, and Butler meshed well. Rondo shot poorly, 1-8, but distributed well against a tough defensive team to which his teammates picked up the slack. Butler had 24 and Wade contributed 22 with Taj Gibson adding 18. The Bulls shot well but I doubt the efficient bench scoring continues.
  • Isaiah Thomas is producing All-Star numbers. He scores when he wants and with a back-to-back to start the season, he scored 25 in consecutive contests. We will see what he does after a day of rest but after watching him split the Bulls defense possession after possession, it's clear Thomas is going to have a good year.

San Antonio Spurs 102, Sacramento Kings 94

  • Kawhi Leonard is not messing around. Leonard looks like a man on a mission in both games he's played. LaMarcus Aldridge has an off game? No problem. Tony Parker decides he doesn't need to score this game? Give it to Kawhi. He has been scoring with ease while proving why he's the best defensive player in the game. If one thing can be said that is usually unheard of in DFS circles, it's relying on a Spurs player. I think that time has come and his name is Kawhi.
  • DeMarcus Cousins is going to have the most anger-inducing fantasy season of any player. He has games where a triple double comes with ease. Other games, he scores 40 while grabbing 15 rebounds. Some games he gets mad and almost beats up a ref. The last example is usually the one that affects fantasy because an ejected player doesn’t help you win. It may be rare, but while Demarcus Cousins should be a great play each and every night, only his personality will affect his fantasy production. He is the X factor on the Kings and should be played consistently.

Los Angeles Clippers Portland Trail Blazers

  • Blake Griffin is 100%. He looked like the player everyone wants him to be...finally. The Clippers are clearly talented and I know I'm not the only one to say they should have a great year as long as they can stay healthy. Blake Griffin, Chris Paul, and Deandre Jordan are going to be popular among DFS communities. Arguably the best complete point guard with two young, athletic big men? Lob City please come back. We miss you.
  • Trail Blazers need to support Lillard and McCollum. Lillard and McCollum seem to be the only consistent fantasy assets on the Trail Blazers. Near the end of the game when the Clippers kept suppressing late game bursts from Portland and Maurice Harkless was the only player capability of generating offense making it easy to close out a win for Los Angeles. Allen Crabbe led the bench in scoring with 10 points which needs to improve if a Portland wants to compete with the best. Other than those four players, Portland is fantasy irrelevant.
