Sitting inside the top-20 in the FedEx Cup standings, Sam Burns has had a nice season to this point. A top-20 finish last week in the Scottish Open was an encouraging result coming into The Open, but Burns is a confusing option this week. For his career, Burns is still looking for his first top-40 finish at The Open Championship. With that, Burns is still looking for his first top-25 finish of the 2023 major championship season, with a best finish of T29 at the Masters. A reason for concern this week for Burns is his play on approach. Burns sits 147th on tour in strokes gained on approach, 174th in greens in regulation percentage, and 188th in proximity to the hole.
