Robbie Ray Receives Qualifying Offer
3 years agoThe Toronto Blue Jays are extending a one-year, $18.4 million qualifying offer to left-hander Robbie Ray on Saturday. Ray, who is coming off a career season and has a chance to win his first Cy Young award, is surely to decline the offer and cash in on the open market. The 30-year-old southpaw went 13-7 with an American League-leading 2.84 ERA, 248 strikeouts and a 6.7 wins above replacement in a league-high 193 1/3 innings in Toronto in 2021. Ray had signed a one-year, $8 million deal with the Jays after posting a 6.62 ERA in the shortened 2020 season. He had a major league-leading 10 games with double-digit strikeouts, which allowed him to become the first Toronto pitcher to lead the majors in strikeouts. A 6.7% walk rate helped him break out in 2021, but with a career walk rate of 11% entering this season, can Ray replicate his performance next year?
