Rays Acquire Jose Martinez, Randy Arozarena
5 years agoThe Tampa Bay Rays acquired outfielders Jose Martinez and Randy Arozarena from the Cardinals on Thursday in exchange for top left-handed pitching prospect Matthew Liberatore and low-level catching prospect Edgardo Rodriguez. The Cardinals also sent a competitive-balance Round A pick (38th overall) to the Rays, who sent their Round B pick (66th overall) to St. Louis. Tampa had been targeting outfield help to complement Hunter Renfroe, Kevin Kiermaier and Austin Meadows. Martinez, 31, hit .305 with 17 home runs and 83 RBI in 2018, but his numbers dipped with less playing time and an injury last year. He could be a nice bounce-back candidate to take a stab at late in mixed league drafts. Arozarena was called up by the Cards in August, and the speedy 24-year-old was hitting .344 in the minors before his call-up. He went 6-for-20 in the regular season. While Arozarena is likely to start at Triple-A in 2020, he could be used as a fourth outfielder at some point in Tampa and immediately becomes their No. 12 prospect. He's more attractive for his speed in dynasty leagues.
