Patriots Offense Tailored To Cam Newton's Strengths
4 years agoThe New England Patriots completely overhauled their offense to best suit quarterback Cam Newton, and it was on display in the Week 1 win over the Dolphins with a run-heavy offense with plenty of zone reads and quarterback keepers. Newton led the team in rushing on Sunday, taking 15 carries for 75 yards and two rushing scores. The 15 totes were the most by a QB under head coach Bill Belichick and were the second-most of Newton's career (17 carries in 2014). New England ran the ball 42 times for 217 yards, averaging 5.2 yards per carry and three rushing touchdowns. They ran the ball or used play-action on 82.5 percent of their offensive plays. But when he did throw, Newton completed 78.9 percent of his passes. The former MVP can put up points with his arm and legs, but he's also injury-prone with a much lower ceiling given the Pats' options at receiver. He'll continue to be a high-upside QB2 heading into Week 2 against Seattle.
