The Pittsburgh Pirates selected right-handed pitcher Seth Hernandez out of Corona High School in Corona, California with the sixth overall pick in the 2025 MLB Draft. The 19-year-old has a big 6-foot-4 frame with the look of potential frontline starter who features a fastball that sits in the mid-90s that is complemented by a plus changeup and a curve.Kyle Stowers Punishes Former Team with Three-Homer Game
Kyle Stowers had a huge day in his team's 11-1 victory over the Baltimore Orioles. The 27-year-old lefty-swinger went five-for-five with three home runs, an additional run scored, and six RBI. Stowers becomes the second player in MLB history to record a three-homer game against a former team after New York Yankees outfielder Cody Bellinger did it against the Chicago Cubs on Friday night. The Marlins acquired Stowers from Baltimore as part of the return for left-hander Trevor Rodgers in July 2024. That deal looks like a fleecing for Miami, as Stowers has enjoyed a breakout 2025 season. In 346 plate appearances, he's slashing .293/.368/.543 with 19 home runs, 54 RBI, 46 runs scored, and four stolen bases. Stowers will suit up for the National League in the All-Star Game on Tuesday.Source: MLB.com

The Washington Nationals have selected shortstop Eli Willits with the first overall pick in the 2025 MLB Draft out of Fort Cobb-Broxton High School. The 17-year-old infielder is 6-foot-1 and is a switch-hitter. Willits verbally committed to playing collegiate baseball atLuis Gil Fans Six in First Rehab Outing
Luis Gil (lat) was sharp in his first rehab outing as he works his way back from a lat injury that has prevented him from pitching in the big leagues so far in 2025. Gil got the start for Double-A Somerset and threw 3 1/3 innings, allowing two hits, a walk, and an earned run while striking out six. Gil was removed from the game after 50 pitches, so he'll likely need at least a few more rehab appearances before rejoining the Yankees. The 27-year-old flamethrower won the American League Rookie of the Year award in 2024, going 15-7 with a 3.50 ERA, 1.19 WHIP, and 171 strikeouts in 151 2/3 innings (29 starts). There's a clear spot for him in the Yankees' rotation now that fellow starter Clarke Schmidt has been lost for the year due to Tommy John surgery.Source: milb.com
New York Yankees starter Sal Frelick Exits Sunday with Hamstring Discomfort
Sal Frelick (hamstring) left the game in the third inning of his team's 8-1 win over the Washington Nationals on Sunday. Frelick felt discomfort in his left hamstring, according to the team, and was replaced by Isaac Collins in right field. The 25-year-old Frelick is in the midst of his best big-league season, slashing .294/.354/.404 with seven home runs, 39 RBI, 46 runs scored, and 17 stolen bases. He doesn't make a ton of hard contact (26.9% hard-hit rate entering play on Sunday), but he's difficult to punch out (12.7% strikeout rate). Frelick will have the All-Star break to heal his hamstring, so he may be able to avoid missing games. His speed is a big part of his fantasy value, so nursing a bum hamstring could potentially impact his utility in the second half of the season.Source: Milwaukee Brewers
Milwaukee Brewers outfielder Yordan Alvarez to Be Re-Evaluated Thursday, Could Resume Swinging Soon
Yordan Alvarez (hand) is set for re-evaluation Thursday as team doctors consider clearing him to start swinging a bat. Alvarez was placed on the injured list on May 6 with a right hand fracture. His return timeline remains undefined. The 28-year-old slugger was struggling before the injury in 29 games, slashing .210/.306/.340 with three home runs and a .646 OPS. Alvarez reports no pain in his hand and would be a welcome offensive boost for the banged-up Astros as they aim for a postseason run.Source: Chandler Rome
Astros outfielder Jake Meyers to Miss More Than Three Weeks With Calf Injury
Jake Meyers (calf) will miss more than three weeks because of his calf injury. Meyers was placed on the 10-day injured list on July 11 with a right calf strain after it tightened up before a July 9 game against the Guardians. The 29-year-old was enjoying a breakout season before the injury, slashing .308/.369/.405 with three home runs across 89 games. He is now targeting an August return and will aim to recapture his early-season form for a surging Astros team.Source: Brian McTaggart
Astros general manager Dana Brown reported on the team's pregame radio show that outfielder Shane Bieber Set for Rehab Start Tuesday; Eyes August Return After Setback
Shane Bieber (elbow) is scheduled to make his first rehab start Tuesday in the Arizona Complex League after suffering a setback in his Tommy John recovery last month. The 30-year-old is expected to throw around two innings or 35 pitches as he works toward an August return. Bieber made only two starts in 2024 before tearing the UCL in his right elbow, allowing no runs and striking out 20 batters across 12 innings. He has spent his entire career in Cleveland and could be a key addition to a pitching staff that ranks 18th in MLB with a 3.92 team ERA.Source: Tim Stebbins
Cleveland Guardians right-hander Luis Garcia Nearing Return After Setback; Astros Eye Late-July Reinforcement
Luis Garcia (elbow) has worked his way up to 94 mph and is targeting late July to early August for a return. Garcia hasn't appeared in an MLB game since the 2023 season, when an elbow injury forced him to undergo Tommy John surgery. He reportedly experienced a setback in April but is still looking to contribute meaningful innings for a competitive Astros team. Before going down with the injury, Garcia had a 3.61 ERA over four seasons with the Astros and had emerged as a promising starter in the AL West.Source: Brian McTaggart
Astros General Manager Dana Brown has reported that right-hander Chase DeLauter Sidelined With Wrist Injury; Evaluation Coming During Break
Chase DeLauter (wrist) was held out of the lineup for Triple-A Columbus on Sunday due to ongoing right wrist soreness. The 23-year-old also did not start Saturday night and will have the injury examined during the International League All-Star break. DeLauter, the No. 34 prospect in baseball, is slashing .278/.383/.476 with five home runs in 34 games with Columbus. He continues to flash high-end offensive potential but has struggled to stay on the field. The Guardians will hope for good news, as his health remains a key concern heading into the second half.Source: Paul Hoynes
