Padres Won't Get In Yu Darvish's Way
4 years agoThe San Diego Padres don't plan on trying to change starting pitcher Yu Darvish in his first season with the team. He threw a 20-pitch bullpen session on Thursday for the first time this spring and said he felt good. "Had very good control, all in all feeling really good," Darvish said through a team interpreter. The Japanese right-hander has a mid- to high-90s four-seam fastball, but he's at his best when he uses his cutter and slider to get ahead in counts. He finished with a 2.01 ERA and led the National League with a 2.23 FIP last year before finishing second in the NL Cy Young voting. Despite his age (34), Darvish had a 31.3 percent strikeout rate in 2020 and also lowered his walks quite a bit. With a strong offense backing him in San Diego in a pitcher's park, Darvish is a top-10 fantasy ace.
