Cody Ponce to Have Strong Market in Return to U.S.
Right-handed starter Cody Ponce is expected to have a strong market this winter as he attempts to make the jump from the KBO to the big leagues, according to Jeff Passan of ESPN. Ponce, 31, was a former second-round pick by the Milwaukee Brewers in 2015 out of Cal Poly Pomona. He made his MLB debut in 2020 with the Pittsburgh Pirates before pitching in Japan for three years. Last year in Korea, "remade his body, gained three ticks on his fastball, and learned a splitter." Passan believes Ponce is going to land the "largest deal for a KBO-to-MLB jump," and he should be attractive to a team like the San Francisco Giants as a starting pitcher. Ponce had a 5.86 ERA and 1.54 WHIP with 48 strikeouts and 17 walks in 20 outings (five starts) in his two seasons with Pittsburgh, but he's a much different pitcher as he returns to the U.S.
