Nick Mullens Still The Starter
4 years agoSan Francisco 49ers head coach Kyle Shanahan said that the starting job remains "firmly" in the hands of quarterback Nick Mullens after the Thursday night blowout loss to the Packers. Mullens only produced in garbage time against Green Bay, ultimately going 22-for-35 for 291 yards, one touchdown and one interception. For at least another week, Mullens will remain the starter, while C.J. Beathard will back him up. The Niners will also sign veteran signal-caller Josh Johnson to the practice squad for extra depth with Jimmy Garoppolo (ankle) out four to six weeks. In defense of Mullens' shaky play Thursday, he was without most of the starting offensive skill players. He'll be a low-end QB2 with more upside if San Francisco is able to get some of those players back in Week 10 against the Saints.
