2 years agoAtlanta Falcons head coach Arthur Smith said that quarterback Marcus Mariota (knee) will have knee surgery and will land on Injured Reserve, ending his 2022 season. Rookie quarterback Desmond Ridder would have started the rest of the season, regardless. "I'm not a medical expert, I'm just telling you that it had nothing to do with the decision," Smith said. The Falcons want an opportunity to evaluate Ridder in the final four games of the regular season, beginning in Week 15 against the New Orleans Saints on the road in a hostile environment. Like Mariota, Ridder has dual-threat abilities at the QB position, and although he looked good in the preseason, he's bound to struggle at times in his first four NFL games to close out the season. A timetable for Mariota's return will be determined after he undergoes knee surgery.--Keith Hernandez - RotoBaller
