Jhoan Duran 2023 Player Outlook: Top Closer Potential With A Floor That Provides A Load Of Fantasy Value
2 years agoMinnesota Twins reliever Jhoan Duran made his major league debut this year and didn't disappoint. He posted a microscopic 1.86 ERA with a 33.5% strikeout rate and 0.98 WHIP while saving eight games. Duran had three offerings; four-seamer, curveball, and splitter. The righty's fastball had the highest average velocity in baseball, 100.8 MPH, while his curve and splitter got whiffs at a 49.7% and 34% rate, respectively. These led to a 94th-percentile whiff rate and 98th-percentile chase rate. Even with the high-powered pitching, Duran barely walked anyone, issuing free passes just 6% of the time.
Along with a 61% ground ball rate and .187 xBA in 2022, he clearly has the potential to continue being a big plus in the WHIP category. Duran's ERA will rise naturally, but he posted a 0.80 HR/9 with a 17.6% HR/FB and 90th-percentile barrel rate, implying his long-ball numbers will probably be even better in 2023. The 24-year-old might not be the closer to start the season for the Twins. However, current closer Jore Lopez, who produced a 4.37 ERA with just four saves after a trade to Minneapolis last year, might be forced out if he struggles again. Even if Duran saves just 11 games, like Steamer projects, he'll offer fantasy managers a ton of value in the three other departments. His ADP of 120 is a steal considering his '22 numbers and ceiling for next season.
